I would like to see the largest bare root tree pic anyone has

The epidemic of box store and nursery sold girdled root trees has me thinking this would be useful.

A tool to show folks the amount of roots a tree that size normally has and their natural shape.

However i am not going outside and uprooting my 13 foot acer rubrum for the pic. Anyone have any ideas where to get one? Subdivision construction has slowed to its natural pace close to matching population growth so i dont have as many chances to go hose the dirt off a knocked over field grown tree.

If you get one somebody should send a picture to a couple mail order internet nurseries that send you sticks with no roots also.Their employees don't know that trees need roots to live.Nature Hills is one of the nurseries.

My other topic and the end of the World at War DVD got me thinking and posting. Does anyone have pictures of a large tree which has had all the soil washed or blown off its roots? You would think someplace in front of some subdivision the University of XXX would have paid a construction crew to remove the soil from around a soon to be felled white oak or something and taken some pics. Oh, the link below is where that pic comes from. Guess these guys would know. Their quote "1. Pagoda dogwood (2-2.5" trunk diameter) late May, in leaf and flowering-before transplant. 2. Same tree bare root, ready for transport. Conventional methods would require a 20-24" root ball, removing 75% of the root mass. 3. The root mass is 8ft across." Wow, these root balled fellas folks transplant recover after losing 75% of their root mass. Amazing. Couple of things to know: I am sorry to say that those are some pretty sad looking roots that your trees came with. Citrus trees have LOTS of very fine fibrous-looking roots usually, and that is very sparse. I would definitely be worried about the long-term viability. Secondly, and probably more importantly, is that the leaves on the trees to the right and at least on some of them to the left look like they're in clusters of 3. That means that they are 1 of 2 things: Poncirus trifoliata, a not-quite citrus fruiting (not condsidered edible) and flowering related plant that is used for rootstocks of citrus trees, or you have some trees with sucker growth of trifoliate rootstock. I cannot see a graft line in the pics (I will qualify this by saying I have purchased a grafted tree where the grafting was so smooth it was kinda tough to locate and am by no stretch of the imagination an expert!), so I would be concerned that you have just plain old trifoiate trees. Now, thats just fine unless that wasn't what you ordered and thought you were going to get an edible sweet orange or a decorative but-still-usuable sour orange. You can find pictures of trifoliate plants on the internet to compare, as well as orange leaves to look at. All is not lost though, and I am sure someone else will chime in about that... Here in Cali all the trees I see are grafted, and there is usually a diagonal line or a knob that indicates where this occurs. I look for a change in bark texture lines anywhere from 2 inches to 8-9 inches from the soil line for this. It's usually not very hard to see--you can double check your trees. When I shop for trees in nurseries, I often see them with some trifoliate sucker growth appearing. I think Four Winds Growers has a picture of a graft line on their website--look them up to see. If it were me, I would just ask the nursery/company you ordered from about it directly once you are armed with some knowledge. I smell a scam. HTH.

Wow, you folks are wonderful! Thanks for all the responses and encouragement. Diana is right, I need to label my photos. (And thanks, Diana, now that I have things in the gallery, I will go back and put a supersecret spy code on the PB albums! Nice to "see" you too!)In the L along the post and rail fence, I already have roses planted, and a few lilies which are starting to peek through the ground. I'll get more detailed pictures this weekend, but I have "hot" colors along the short end of the L (bright purple, yellow, red, orange), then white after that, and pinks in the last section. There are five roses there now, with 6 more going in this spring. I do know I need to do some underplanting with things, and add some height as suggested by MeMo. In fact, MeMo, I do have my eye on a teteur for one white rose by the fence, since it just might not ramble along the posts as I had hoped. The slab is actually one of two in the yard. The larger, which is a real patio, is next to the garage. The one next to the lasagna bed was intended as a parking slab for the PO's DH's construction truck. (Say THAT 5 times fast!) Party Music, you are right, the soil there is probably affected by the slab. The two slabs are connected by a concrete path. The PO's DH worked in concrete. They got a lot for free. The grass to the right of the slab in the photo was where the PO had a melon patch and BBQ pit. My DH has spent a lot of time and effort getting grass to grow there, and it is starting to pay off. I've never thought of turning that paved area right off of it into a sitting area. That could be really lovely. GGG, thanks for the offer! Are they even available bare root in May? In most areas, bare root fruit trees come into stock at nurseries or other plant outlets in late winter - January or February - and that is when they should be planted. While still fully dormant. Once they emerge from dormancy - start producing flower buds or leaves - they become very difficult to maintain as bare root and start deteriorating unless potted up. If you can maintain proper watering over summer, I wouldn't hesitate to plant a potted fruit tree in May but I wouldn't waste my money on one that was still bare root at that time.

Roots are important! At first I was amazed mail order bare root trees survived at all. Now I'm amazed larger transplants do with all the trouble it is to move them with any reasonable percentage of their roots.

Unfortunately Tree nurseries are interested in quick profit and they ship to what so called pare feet trees. In my opinion it is a crime. This Industry has to be regulated. From my experience Bare foot trees takes One full year ton recover. If it recovers. I wrote to USDA and my congressman Th look at the rip-off the consumer gets from those profiteers nurseries. If you want to weep and lose your money buy some trees from Willis Orchard. They have beautiful but all fake.

i recall long ago.. seeing a picture or drawing.. of some scholars.. who very carefully dug up and entire tree ... right out to the root tips ....

anyone recall the same.. and how do we find it..

Ken, you may be thinking about the one on some U of FL site. I'm not sure of the web address, but what I remember matches your description. They had excavated the entire root system of a pretty large tree and there were pictures of it with one of the workers standing down in the root area (if I remember correctly). Someone posted the link in this forum, but I can't seem to find it with a very brief search. Maybe I'll look for it more, later.

Never heard the reference "pare feet" before either.I did get my money back though.I don't mean hardly any roots I mean a stub and strings of root 2 inches long.And only 2 of these strings.What do you mean fake? From willis orchards?

Ken, you can download a free PowerPoint viewer at the Microsoft Download Center. I'm sure there are other freeware programs out there that will do the same thing.

Cool pic of the cedar stump/roots. It's also interesting that fairly large roots from another tree can be seen in the excavation but the tree is not shown in the pictures and doesn't appear to be overhanging the site at all. That seems to show how roots really can extend out more than twice as far as the canopy.

Brandon, that is a pretty decent power point presentation. I love the pics of trees somehow standing in sidewalk squares lol.

Ken, that is a fascinating photo. I have used the power point viewer on my Windows XP computer. It works fine. BTW, I was able to view the power point doc through a free app on my Samsung cell phone!
