Ready for Winter, Pushing the Zone

Our wonderfully warm and sunny fall is over at last. My darling wife and I just spent the day wrapping the roses, or at least about 50 of them and getting them ready for winter. So for those of you in warmer climes, heres what it takes to be a rose fanatic in zone 4b.

I am using more straw this year and wrapped each bush, then tyed them with twine This year . We're hoping to get more than the usual 6 inches of cane through the winter this way. The straw is thicker and the tying makes it tighter, so we'll see if it works next spring.

We're forcast to get 10 to 12 inches of snow by the end of the week, so that should give them all a warm and insulated bed for the winter. I'm dreaming of big, bodaceous, floriferous shrubs, covered in bloom next July. Wish us luck.
