Roses like water but don't like having their feet wet for extended periods, it rots the roots. Try watering one day and then the next dig down with a trowel to see how dry the soil is. Do the same the following day and so forth.

WTRPRFR says it best. Interior french drains collect water that has already gone under the footing of the basement and then get pumped out. But why collect the water after it is already slowly eating your footing away. Also interior drains do not deal with any cracks issues in your walls. Unless you have very close quarters the exterior french drain is the way to go. It collects the water before entering from under your slab in your basement. I never liked interior drains. They are a waste of money. Bought a 1920 house with just a sump pump and no interior drains. Sump pump gets the water out just as well, without interior drains. Unless your soil under the foundation doesn't transfer water to the sump pump. Excavated about 5 feet deep around the entire house and added a exterior french drain after I repaired cracks and waterproofed the exterior side. Added clean outs on my drain. My wife and I never want to hand shovel about 5' deep, 18" wide, and about 150' of dirt ever again. But no water. And got a renter living down there now. Interior drains are like walking into the house with muddy boots. But why do that when you can take them off outside.lmao

I don't know where you live. Where I live, we have to put drainage tile right next to the concrete footing that the house sits on. The water that reaches this tile is either fed to the storm sewer system under the street or into a sump pit sunk into the basement floor where a sump pump sends it out to the ditch. When water starts coming into a house, it often means that the drain tile is now blocked with silt and cannot do it's job. Also, basement walls constructed from concrete block often develop cracks in them that allow water to seep through. Poured concrete walls can also develop shrink cracks. Both types of walls benefit greatly from the use of a waterproof membrane such as Platon or something similar. If you use the link below, the diagram is self-explanatory. It's hard to say where your water is coming from. The water table in the ground changes from one season to the next. In the summer, the table can be low enough that no water will come into your basement but in the spring it can rise substantially. A french drain won't solve that problem. French drains only work for water that is on the surface or coming out of the sky. Any water in the ground that is lower than the French drain will just find its way into your basement if there is an opening for it to go through. Your best remedy is to excavate all around the house, right down to the footing level. Remove the old footing tile. Lay down one inch of clear 3/4" stone. Install 4" perforated flexible drain tile that has a filter cloth sleeve on it. Use stakes to keep it in place against the sides of the footings and then pour more 3/4" clear stone over top of the tile until it is at least four inches above the top of the pipe. I would then install a blanket of filter cloth over top of the clear stone prior to backfilling but I would also install the Platon membrane too, in accordance with the instructions that come with it. Of course, this new tile must be hooked up to your sump pit or the line out to the street in order for it to work properly. Anything less than this is not likely to give you a permanent fix. Water coming into a basement render that basement useless and it's also a health hazard due to mold and mildew. As for your roof issue, that's due to inadequate insulation in your ceiling joists. You either rip out all the existing ceilings and tacke the problem from inside the house or you remove the shingles and roof deck and insulate properly from the outside.
