I'm happy that I was able to transplant today eventhough my body is very sore after working on the new bed yesterday. I grabbed some big rocks from my other bed then also moved 2 silvermound plants. In front of the 2 rocks are the rock soapwort and behind left are the coneflowers.

In few weeks, I will either plant chartreuse sweet potato vine left of the silvermound in front, then also plant the dark version of sweet potato vine between the 2 silvermounds. Or, I will also put four o' clocks limelight behind the rocks and purple ruffles basil beside it.

Oh, here is an interesting info I witnessed today. The soapwort and coneflower were wsowed on the same jug. I just put a thin paper carton divider in the middle. I noticed that the divider after 2 weeks I brought them out, it curled due to water/snow/etc. The divider covered the purpleconeflower seeds. The coneflower seeds that got covered by the divider germinated but the seeds that weren't shaded by the divider, didn't germinate. No issue on soapwort wsowing. :)

Woohoo, I'm so glad, WalMart started selling sweet potato vine. Lucky I went with my wife today. I got them $2 each. The sweet potato vine were outside. About 60% of them are very stressed. These are the best I found although still a a little bit stressed. Hopefully they'll recover.

The 2 plants at the back are for the pots or hanging basket along with the petunias, coleus, and spv.

That's interesting about the coneflower. I have some indoors that are sprouting well, under a fluorescent (I'm WSing a ton too). Could the wet divider have increased moisture to those seeds, encouraging germination?

Did you get hit by that thunderstorm "dot?" I'm getting it right now.

I've been ws for 7+ years and generally start my perennial seeds anytime after winter solstice though mostly in late January/February. Annuals get sown in late March/early April. Most everything sprouts by midMay. I probably should have covered the jugs during some of those daily rains. With the changing weather patterns I will consider it a lesson learned and hope that we don't have another such spring for many years. Some of the jugs were "second chance" jugs, seeds that didn't sprout last year and given a second sowing to see if they might another time. Perhaps those seeds would not have sprouted this year anyway. A few of the old reliables sprouted, alcea, aquilegia, dianthus, papaver, penstemon, platycodyn. Annuals: antirrhinum, cleome, gomphrena, mirabalis, nasturtium, nicotiana, portulaca, salvia, and zinnia.

I'm picky about the varieties I plant, so I've only planted two so far, Caspian Pink and Koralik, about ten days ago. I resisted buying any seedlings during the warm spell in February, and waited until we had a week of sun in March. Both are in walls-o-water. I'll probably plant a dozen more (including the ones I'm growing from seed). Bahia wondered why do it...To push the limits of what can be grown when, of course. And also because, having grown my own tomatoes and raspberries and cucumbers and strawberries, I can't eat store-bought versions any more (and rarely eat the farmers' market versions). The difference in quality is so astounding that I don't eat these unless I've grown them. Last year, I planted 2 plants in mid-February and a bunch more in March, despite the rain and cold. The year before, I planted a bunch in late March, even though it was an especially cold and rainy year. Both years, I used walls-o-water or bubble wrap, plus sheets of plastic to protect from rainstorms and morning frost, and I was out there in the wind and rain securing and replacing the protective covers. But I can eat homegrown tomatoes in June! IIRC, last year I got a couple by the end of May. This year I've also planted some tomato seeds outdoors using the "wintersowing" technique pioneered (or publicized) by some east-coast gardeners: Poke air and drainage holes in some some small plastic containers, fill with soil, plant seeds, and transplant (with protection) even before the plants develop true leaves. I just had to try this to see if it really works. A few of my seedlings are reaching the top of the containers so should be ready to plant out, though they're only a couple inches high. Last year I waited until the soil was warm to plant beans, and I could have planted a lot earlier. I saw some beans producing very well at the beginning of July at the community garden. So this year, I'm going to plant beans by April 1. Or maybe earlier -- I saw another garden plot that just put in some transplants last week.

Jan, I just love all your clump shots, they are gorgeous looking. I couldn't even pick a favorite after looking at all of them several times. When I first saw your NOID clump, I was so excited because I really thought that it was the same as one of my NOID's. But my photo shows it is more pink. Yours appears to be in the shade, so am not sure if that has anything to do with it. I will have to watch to see if mine really is as pink as in my picture. Mine gets only about 18" and doesn't rebloom. It doesn't even have scapes on it yet. Probably not the same. Please post more of your fabulous clump shots! Vickie 5 years as a NOID:(

Diane, I grew potatoes because I have a desire to learn to grow edible crops. I don't know that I will ever have the need to live on only what I can grow, but I have a desire to be able to do that. I hope to interest my children and grandchildren in being able to do the same thing. I have read and listened to a lot of people talk about growing potatoes and wondered what book they read it out of, because it didn't always seem like they had real knowledge and experience. All over the net there are people growing in containers and grow boxes that they build themselves and claiming that the plant will form potatoes as much as 16 inches up the plant. I would like to know what variety they have found that does this, because I am not seeing that happen. In some cases, I got as many, or more, potatoes from one plant than I used to plant the entire bed, but they didn't come very far up the stalk. My stalks were well mulched, so there was room for them to come up the stem, but they didn't. My plants were way over 3 feet high, so the problem was not in growth. The plants are pretty up until the time they bloom, but after that they start a slow decline. After a while, you have a pile of straw or dirt with ugly, yellowed plants. Then the leaves fall off, eventually everything dries up so you can dig them up. I am only telling you this so you understand why I am changing my method of planting. I am going to kill out the grass in a new un-used area of my property (not the fenced garden). This is going to be my new compost pile for a few months. Next spring it is going to be my potato garden. The taste thing -- good, but IMO desn't come close to the difference in a cardboard tomato and a homegrown one. Given use of the same amount of space, I can think of a lot of things I would rather grow in the space, still I think they are worth growing. I don't plan to use my valuable fenced in garden for this crop in the future. Now, if when I dig the last little patch, I find 200 pounds, I might change my mind. LOL

I have silvermound too. I just love it. I have it throughout all of my beds near the borders. I planted it last year.

I might have to get some SP Vine too. Pretty!

stage_rat, you may be right. I noticed that the potting mix I put was below 3" and the top wasn't secure enough. There were open slots on the sides which made the potting mix dry too quickly.

All four pots are out now in the sun. Forecast is that we'll get 85F today. Woohoo!!! Perfect, it rained really hard last night and we were in the 50Fs and today, 85F. Woohoo!!! :D

Awesome weather today!!! I was able to plant echinops ritro, dianthus firewitch and snow on the mountain. :)

When I get a change later, I will plant Scabiosa Burgundy and Coreopsis Tetra Giants.

I also have huge germination success with Agastache. Has anyone here in zone5 seen them come back?

Agastache can be hardy, or not. Some are zone 6 and 7. The one called "Anise Hyssop" is hardy, and so are a bunch of others. They need good drainage, though. Also, they're heavy reseeders.

The 2 Agastaches I have here are Korean Mint and Heather Queen.

Oh, I want to share what I completed today, I planted the following:

1. Echinops Ritro
2. Dianthus firewitch
3. Snow on the mountain
4. Scabiosa Burgundy
5. Coreopsis Tetra Giant
6. Agastache(most likely it's the Korean Mint)

I was also planning to plant Russian Sage but decided not to because they were still very small and I ran out of topsoil as well.
