Boule de Neige or Variegata di Bologna in the PNW

I live in the state of Oregon near the border with the state of Washington. I understand that the class of bourbon roses has a high incidence of black spot in the state of Oregon. Does Boule de Neige and or Variegata di Bologna grow well on their own roots and without spray in the state of Oregon? What is the normal size for both Boule de Neige and Variegata di Bologna in the PNW region?

'Variegata di Bologna' blackspots quite badly in the PNW (in my garden, it does) but has sufficient vigor to outgrow disease. Of the Bourbons, this was one of only a couple that were not tragically disfigured by defoliation due to disease. Still, by the time it was in full flush, half the older leaves were spotted and/or dropped.

The area's wrong, but I can tell you that Boule de Niege is a big, lusty plant here, own-root.

You're welcome! It's not odd that cooler zones will report more fragrance from many than warmer areas. Those in the cooler places are probably smelling them when the oils and alcohols are most volatile and smell the most. We in the warmer areas often miss out because they evaporate faster as the heat increases. Also, as aridity increases, the scents burn out faster. The various components of each rose's fragrance evaporate at different rates, so one may smell very Damask at first, quickly morphing into orris or citrus, finishing a completely different scent before losing any detectable trace for the day. Any user can access the Advanced Search, but Premium Membership permits you to specify multiple traits and types, where basic membership only provides Advanced Search using one criteria. Kim

I live near Denver and have purchased nearly all of my roses from them. I saw an ad in the Rocky Mountain News 3 or 4 years ago for an Old Garden Rose sale sponsored by a Boy Scout Troup in Denver. I went there with my mom and a buddy and bought a Variegata Di Bologna (sorry if my spelling is off) and a Louise Odier. I was hooked! I didn't know much about old roses. I've been back to that sale every year since, collecting treasures. I was organizing my plant tags this summer and realized all my OGR's came from the same place - HCR's. So I visited their website and found the sale. I ordered my last 3, 2 Ausmary's and a Mountain Mignonette on 9/13, they shipped on the 14th and were at my door on the 16th, in great shape! I planted them the 19th, we had a light frost last week, so I put pots over them one night. We have our first hard freeze warning for tonight so I went to put the pots over them again. One of the Ausmary's has grown so much in the last week that the pot I used last week is too short! I didn't realize it had grown that much. I know there are a lot of great rose vendors on the east coast. I highly recommend HCR for those of you in the western states. Too bad my planting season is done!

Thanks Serenasyh, I agree tha we should be able to edit our posts...I end up posting multiple follow ups too sometimes! My Belle des Jardins was actually purchased as La Rubanee, and then I accidentally ordered a duplicate roses from a different seller under the name Belle des Jardins, not realizing it was the same rose...oops! I like the name Belle des Jardins, so I refer that it that way :) Maybe because its still young, but I was picturing the blooms to be fuller; more like Variegata di Bologna, but with softer colors. I very much agree with you that the OGRs need to be promoted...so many people write them off because many are once bloomers, but when you think about it, there are tons of popular perranials that only bloom once (peonies, most lilac, azaleas,flowing trees). In my experience, my OGRs are much healthier and less picky than many moderns. Beautiful picture of Anna de Diesbach. I haven't purchased from Long Ago Roses, but I know Linda posts on here. Oh Sara, I hope mine does half as well when it's done growing up! I got SDLM in 2017 and put her on a bed that gets sun about half the year. Peonies do amazingly well there. SDLM sulked and balled up and grew backwards. This spring I moved her to a spot that gets much more sun and the response was practically instantaneous. The first bloom was a mess and I thought of someone here describing SDLM as balled-up used tissue (yup!), but she threw a bunch of other buds so I decided to give her a bit more time (I mean, it's only May). I think we have a stay on her execution...

Wrong zone here, too, but I can attest that 'Variegata di Bologna' grows steadily in lean conditions on its own roots. Unfortunately I can't tell you anything about black spot, as it's not a problem in my garden. But I couldn't resist the temptation to put in a good word for it.

I live and garden at the very bottom of South Puget sound. I suspect that our weather conditions are quite similar.
My favorite Bourbon is Souv de St Anne. Mine has just completed her second summer here. 3' tall by 2'[ wide and deep. She gets some BS late October. The rest of the time she is clean. I have her planted in a protected area.
Yesterday I surrounded her base with a mulch coverring to help her through our so far easy winter.

cl. Souv. de MalMaison is another rose which flourishes here. She is planted next to cl. Cecile Brunner. The plan is to intertwine the branches so that there are usually blooms peeking out.Both bushes have finished their first summer herw.
I cant ccomment about the two Bourbons you are looking to grow as I dont grow them. Good luck in what you choose.
