As for that nasty thistle, that is probably one of the very few weeds I'd use a DROP of Round Up on, if nothing else worked! It's almost a loosing battle to get up the whole tap root!

I found myself asking a boulder the other day if could so kindly move to the other side of the property during the night without making too much noise. This thing is 7 feet thick in one spot. I see your GW name is Dr. Deb. and will surmise that we are not dealing in psychiatry. At least I hope not. Else you've just discovered a whole bunch of garden happy nut cases to study. :O)

Hah. If only I were a psychiatrist. I could specialize in Garden Disorders. No, I'm an economics professor (and my plants act just like my students when I talk to them about supply and demand --- they wilt before my very eyes)!

Never did. Neither did any of the other ones so out of spite I built gardens around them.

I don't understand why it seems crazy to talk to plants and animals. They are living things, they respond to us, they pick up on our positive energy, they understand us, they respond to our moods.

You want to know crazy? Crazy is a sports fan watching his/her favorite sport, yelling and screaming instructions at the television!! I shake my head and think to myself "Yeah... right... those players will get right on that!!"

I, on the other hand, only yell at the tv during soap operas.

tiff - we always LOVE those boulders - what would your gardens be without them? (Still beautiful, of course - but they are so interesting...)

I totally talk to everything in my yard. I caught myself apologizing to the bird I startled yesterday... LOL!

And yes, I feel totally rotten if I hurt a worm while I'm digging. And people think I'm nuts when I throw them back in the yard after it rains and they're all over the driveway.

Okay, I have to comment based on the couple of themes in this thread.

First of all, and all you gardeners know this, but when you hack a worm in half, you're only helping to make more worms. Yes, I apologize to them too, because if childbirth hurts, imagine what it must feel like to create new worm life! Slimy, nasty, wriggly, lovely little worms...

And as far as talking to plants and animals, I think I have one that may be a cake-topper. I grew up on a horse ranch, and so the talking to animals thing just goes without saying. Because of my small size, I trained many of the horses (riding and otherwise), and became accustomed to using my voice to sooth them. So, imagine my surprise when a roommate laughed at me years later for using that same soothing voice.

Imagine a huge, hulking beast--potentially lethal in size and strength--that gets a little out of control. Imagine giving the huge beast a nudge to get moving, and MOVE THE BEAST DOES!! All of a sudden, there's no stopping the beast. Tight turns and all the usual tricks to make the beast stop simply aren't working. Refusing to panic, I quickly throw the truck with the stuck accelerator in park, and my roommate is laughing hysterically at me.

Fortunately, she had grown up with horses, too, and knew that my talking to the truck was as much to calm my OWN nerves as anything, but she didn't have to laugh! Needless to say, that was the last yellow light I ever "pushed" through in that truck again!

Hey, who are you calling crazy! :) There's nothing wrong with talking to things that can't talk back. In fact that's one of the advantages! When people question why I'm talking to whatever I'm talking to (including myself) I just tell them that there isn't anyone else around intelligent enough to talk to!

I heard that the idea that cutting worms in half makes more is untrue - that they just die.
Any worm experts here?

Thank you all for making me feel better (although my DH says he still thinks I'm crazy).

I love the look of boulders in the garden too --- I have a smallish one that a professional landscaper put in the front bed before we moved in --- it looks a little artificial there to me since we don't have many rocks here. But, my daffodils look so CUTE all clumped around it!

I don't know if it really kills the worms or not, but they sure look mad when I hack them in pieces. Yuck.

Only the head portion of an earthworm can regrow a tail. The tail can't grow a new head. Planarians can regenerate either.

Your plants don't talk back to you? That's odd....

Nancy, sometimes my plants talk back to me. But it's usually "Hey, you fat cow watch where you're stepping!" And after all I've done for them!

Then you need to respond to them with "If I can germinate you, then I can terminate you! Watch it there or you're compost."

I believe some worms can regenerate some body parts, depending on type of worm and where he was severed.

I talked to the worms just hours ago. I dug a couple up from the ground (which is exciting all on it's own, we don't have many just around in the ground). I disturbed MANY that were living in the trash can filled with last summer's compost, then I dumped them into the ground and mixed it up. I tried to cover them quickly, but yes, I did talk to them. I talked to the wild rabbits that were startled to see me, they're much jumpier in the spring than they are by summer.

I also talk to my dogs and my cats. I used to talk to my grandmother's pony too.

As long as they don't start talking back (in English at least, my cat meows a conversation, or yells at me for food), we're ok. When they answer us, it's time to take a little drive...

I talked to my dog all the time, he followed me most of the time. When he died I found myself talking to myself.

I still talk to myself when alone. Don't even ask how long he's been gone. I miss him so much.

Tiffy, love your rocks. I too gather any I can get for my garden. I make hubby haul them all summer. We built on forty acres that was part of his fathers farm. Complains that he spent the first part of his life hauling rock away and now he is hauling them back;o)

I tell my husband all the time that that's the reason I married him 3o years ago- to carry heavy things, open pickle jars, computer maintenance.

It's a life sentence, too, 30 years and counting.
