So sorry about your dead bunny. It is sad, even though the bunnies are SO annoying when they eat our favorite plants. Life can be tough. A few days ago I found a little bunny that had gotten tangled up in some bird netting. At first I thought he was just being very still and didn't bother him. When I came by several minutes later and he was still in the same place I looked closer and saw he had gotten himself all wrapped up by the netting. I would have been SO upset if I found him dead later. I had to get scissors to get him unwrapped, but at least he wasn't hurt-just horrified that I picked him up!!

He is a tiny bunny also, probably a very young baby.

I wouldn't worry about the tomatoes. Yes, volunteers come up much later than this. Perhaps the beginning of May is when I see them (cooler by the lake). The jugs will come up earlier than the volunteers, but there's still a lot of cold weather to get through, so it's good to not have to worry about tomato sprouts. If you do want them up and growing, put them in your warmest sunniest spot but be ready to vent them on warm sunny days so they don't cook.

I'm sorry about the dead baby bunny. Last year a squirrel drowned in one of my rain barrels! I had just put them out, and it was 1/3 full. He was either curious or thirsty. Oh, I still feel so guilty. I immediately got a narrow piece of chicken wire that I keep draped over the inside of the rain barrel all the time. (Well, first I dumped the water out of the rain barrel.) You could do the same with your window wells, maybe stretching it across the top so nothing falls in--chicken wire is pretty invisible--and then you can at least feel like it won't ever happen again!

I just sprayed with my new deer deterrent last night--and then it rained and rained. I forgot the bit about not using it right before it rains. Sigh.

the liquid fence smells awful, It is like throw up!
It was a little wet this morning so I may spray mine again also. It said it was rain proof but I am sure it diluted it some. I have never used before so I hope it works.

ellen, I put a plank into the window wells so that if anything falls into it then I hope they can climb out. I did that after finding a dead toad in there. I have the plank on a real angle so it isn't too steep.
I had a very tiny baby bunny fall into my pool several years ago. I got to him right away, and was able to get him out in time, but I felt sick thinking that I might have found him too late. I put him under one of my peonies and he sat for a while and then was gone a while later when I looked.

My window wells are deep. I need to get covers and have been planning to. they are a bit expensive cause mine are big and an odd shape. Plus Hubby is picky what kind we get

Liquid fence isn't sold in Canada, but I just looked up the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for Rabbit Repellent-Dual Action on their website. Ingredients include garlic, putrescent egg, paprika, cinnamon oil,thyme oil, and 90% water. Hmmmm. I'm thinkin' I might try mixing up something myself. There's some chems in there as well, but they're probably stabilizers and emulsifiers (xantham gum).
Worth a try for me..I'm gonna crack an egg into a jar tonight and leave it to "putrefy" for awhile.
It also sounds a lot like a recipe that was going around here a while ago..maybe last spring? :O)

Last year, I had a very tiny baby bunny that the girls chased like crazy. The poor thing finally jumped in the pond. I fished it out and toweled it off, held it close and set it back outside at the feet of St. Francis.

They ravage my lettuce, but I would never hurt one. I've got St. Francis (patron of the animals) in the "courtyard" garden overlooking the ponds and the fish children. The other side of the yard is Pagan--a huge statue of Faunus in all his goat/man glory presiding over the woodland garden. The deck is Italian with a 4 foot statue of David with basilico planted at his feet. I've got something for everyone out there.

You aren't a bunny killer. His Mom was at fault for not putting him in a safe place and telling him to stay put. That is a basic bunny rule---stay where Mom puts you. You would never have hurt him; it was just one of those sad things that can happen.

Prof, why am not the least bit surprised that there's a giant statue of a satyr in your garden????

The deer deterrent I'm trying is Tree Guard. It uses latex to make it stick to everything, and it will last 6 months. You have to reapply to new growth, of course. It is supposed to taste awful to deer. No effect on bunnies, they say. I sprinkled dried blood on the plants while the spray was wet, to "glue" some dried blood on there. It seems to have dried fine before the rain came. I need a better sprayer for it--the little hand pump thing I have just sprayed huge droplets.

I used blood meal and bone meal the last few years and it seemed to keep the bunnies away. This year I was out and did not put it down and more bunnies were around and chewed up my tulips.

I will still use the blood meal and bone meal. I was worried they might get used to it though.

This will be my first year dealing with bunnies in my garden,i saw one last night,i have deer and coon,way to many,last year a coon was walking around the edge of my pond,he must have knocked a big rock loose,tryed to hang on,but they both went to the bottom of the pond,he was laying at the bottom with the rock on top of him,it was a horriable sight,i can still see the poor thing.
