one Very Small question re: overwintering

Hello, I know that the question of overwintering mulch mediums has been discussed ad nauseum, but I wanted to ask about people's experience using hay as a winter protective mulch. Are hay or weed seeds a problem? Also, how eager is hay to hold onto water? We usually have fairly dry winters here, (thus my desire for protection, as I can't count on snow), but I don't want something that could possibly get really soggy. If not hay, would really dried out leaves be an option?

Hi,

No hay, unless you want grass and or alfalfa growing in around your roses. If it's good hay, it will likely have lots of viable seeds. That stuff is really hard to pull up (alfalfa has a deep tap root!).

Leaves, yes. There's a thread about it on Rocky Mountain Gardening forum.

Clean straw works OK, rather than hay. If it's wheat straw and some wheat germinates, at least it's easy to pull up (it forms shallow rooted clumps). I have used straw for a few years w/ no problems.

I overwinter many tropicals (parrot's feather, papyrus, water poppy, lemon bacopa, umbrella palm, and a few others). What I did was set up a large 100 gallon tub in the basement - purchased at any farm supply store. I then hung two 48 inch shop lights (4 bulbs) over the top of the tub for 14 hours a day which I attached with chains to the basement rafters. I lower them as closely as I can to the plants. I learned last year that I didn't need to submerge the top of the pots in water - that actually caused mold problems. Just keep enough water in the bottom of the tub to keep the soil moist. The exceptions are the water poppy and bacopa - for those plants, I submerge them in their own small tubs and raise them higher on tall overturned pots to get closer to the lights as the papyrus is quite tall. I add very small amounts of fertilizer periodically to the water. Last year my parrot's feather did not survive floating in the cool water so this year I took cuttings of the parrot's feather and potted them in dirt. Make sure the pot has holes in the bottom and keep it in the water so the soil is constantly moist. Parrot's feather and bacopa are hard to come by around here, so I need plants earlier in the season. Everything is doing great and come late May I return them to the pond. This treatment is very similar to growing any plant or starting seed indoors using artificial light. I have left the thalia in the pond this year as it was quite large and took up too much space to move indoors. If it dies, I'll get another. If you want to try this system, it's very easy. It may not work with everything, but I was pleasantly surprised how well most of the plants did.

Clematis can take a year off and come up after you think they are dead. If your president is alive I would move Polish spirit. Polish spirit gets huge and would smother your other clematis in time. It is not the best time of year to transplant clematis. If your Polish spirit was just planted this spring and is only 8" high then yes you could probably move it now. Try not to disturb the roots as much as possible. You may have to water it every day at it's new location until the weather cools down.

Another Fly, This One Very Small

There are very small, yellow, clear-winged flies that hang out on my Ptelea trifoliata/wafer ash/hops tree. I grow it, because it's such a favorite host plant for giant swallowtails, and tiger swallowtails use it also. I saw this fly on top of one of the giant swallowtail eggs. I've been finding a lot of dud giant swallowtail eggs, so I'm wondering if this fly sucks out the inside of butterfly eggs? Could it be injecting something, like fly eggs, inside them, parasite fashion? I brought these eggs in to raise myself - they've turned dark, like they're about to hatch. Here's the fly and eggs - Any help would be appreciated - giant swallowtails have been rare around the entire country this year, and I'd like to raise as many to adulthood as possible. Thanks! Sherry

I posted this on another thread but since it may not be seen there am posting a new thread Rosie, have you stored your large brugs in water other years? Do you keep them in a lighted room or in a cool dark room like I do with dormant plants? The cuttings I grow in water are kept in a cool basement room near an east window. They don't get any supplemental light. I would like to do to try your technique myself as it is getting very difficult for me to carry potted ones up and down my basement stairs. I have over wintered cuttings in water for many years and hadn't thought about doing the same with the dug up rooted ones.

I always use straw - a lot fewer seeds than hay.

Yeesh, I now have a terribly embarassing question; how do I tell the difference between hay and straw? I have a bale of 'straw' colored stuff. I looked through it, and it doesn't seem to have (many) seed heads in it. I found some pieces that obviously used to have seeds on them (kind of zig zaggy) but don't anymore. The majority of it is fairly wide, very stiff stuff. It doesn't look like it would be pleasant to eat. Can I assume this is straw? Thanks so much; not much of a farm girl, it seems!

Unless you are guaranteed that the hay or straw (doesn't matter, they both are notorious for seeds) are cleaned for seeds don't use them. You can't imagine the mess in the spring (believe me, I know).

What you can use are leaves, ground or not, but ground is better. You can do this with a chipper/shredder if you have one, or a lawn mower and crunch them up. Pine needles will also work famously if you have any. I'm always in favor of leaf mold. It's full of nutrients and is the fastest and best way to enrich the soil.

Mulch is good too, but it's expensive.

Straw should not have any seed heads at all - it should only be stalk material. Hay will have seed heads.
