Favorite Garlic and Why Should it be My New Garlic

When fall comes and it is time to plant garlic I am sticking with my 3 standbys (listed below). I am also planting an organic "purple" that I got a local organic grocery. I have room for one more, and I am looking for suggestions.

My 3 standbys:

Chinese Pink

Chesnok Red

Incheliam Red.

I have grown these three for a few years now, and I originally picked them for there extreme differences in harvest times in my area. I am looking to expand my garlic palate. What are your suggestions, and why do you like it?

Thai garlic. I got it from a dealer at the farmer's market. It is red and beautiful and full bulbs were developed in April. This was at least 2 months earlier than my other garlics.

I have never heard of that type. Can you tell me more about it? What group is it in?

My cousin gave me my favorite garlic a few years ago. When I asked him what it was called, he said they call it Up North, because that's where they live. So that's what I call it. It's a hard neck, very white, not too hot and has 6 - 7 very large cloves in a single ring per bulb. Regarding scapes, toss with olive oil and a sprinkling of salt and pepper, and then throw them on the grill until they are a bit charred. Absolute heaven!! I plant more garlic so we have more scapes to grill. Garlic press, I have one but am not impressed. I'm better bashing and chopping with a chef's knife. Steve

How often should I use my soap/garlic spray?

I don't think you understand how a soap-and-oil spray works. It only kills the insects that have actually been coated with it. If you don't spray it on, say, a ladybug, that bug will not be harmed. I don't know how much a deterrent it is once it's on the plant if it's just plain soap and oil with no garlic (see below.) It's true that while I'm spraying for spider mites, I can get some lacewings, but quite frankly, if the lacewings had been doing their jobs, I wouldn't have spider mites! The garlic is supposed to repel spider mites and aphids. I don't know if it does, but it definitely doesn't repel ladybugs, mantises and bees. It definitely DOES repel mosquitoes. There is an organic anti-mosquito spray on the market made only from super-concentrated garlic that is very effective for mosquitoes but has been proven to be harmless to all beneficial bugs, bees and birds.

Is my garlic damaged? Should I just pull them out?

Sorry my initial description was so bad. So when I pulled some out I saw the original clove was mushy and I was able to peel it away. I stupidly thought the original clove stayed and new cloves developed around it. I just looked up some pictures and saw 'green garlic' which is the early stages of garlic with no clove. I guess my garlic might be ok after all?

I agree, a fall planting is done to get big leaves through spring. Once you start seeing the center 'scape', appearing is when garlic starts to form its cloves and main bulb. Some of mine were in a low area that seemed to collect too much water, so the tops died off prematurely. I pulled up a couple and found nothing but roots and a slight bulge at the base of the plants. No scapes had been sent up yet, and they must have died back due to the extreme water in the area. Needless to say most of the rest are now just forming some thin stalks at the centers which will enlarge into scapes. These will form flower and/or seed heads and then should be removed. During that scape forming time is when the garlic cloves start to form in the soil. Mine were planted back in October of 2004 and will be harvested by maybe July of 2005 if all goes well... I have 20 different varieties in the ground now so I am not sure what I will say in August,2015.

But now I like Georgian Fire.

I'm really liking a Spanish White garlic I'm growing, with amazingly large cloves. Each head has fewer cloves than some other garlics, but each one is very large and easy to deal with.

Music. Hardy, widely adapted, dependable, stores very well for a hardneck, large easy to use cloves, bulbs can get large, strong flavor (so easy to cook with). I still have some usable bulbs from last year's July/August harvest. VietNamese Red makes a nice, milder companion variety, but does not store as well; so does Siberian.

I also like Japanese, also large cloves and seems to be also very dependable. Big robust plants, seems to be a bit earlier than Music.

These all have the added feature of scapes for early summer cooking.

Those are my favorites, but zone 8 suggests that the Creoles might be just what you would like, even though they are not so well adapted to my Minnesota garden.
