Propagation of rose .
Comments (11)I seem to recall a description of a system, supposedly highly effective, that involved misting the cuttings at intervals around the clock. Maybe in a UF horticulture pub or web page? Plumbing for a misting system could be bought reasonably at Home Depot these days, though I suspect an irrigation timer that would cycle a dozen or more times daily might be more on the expensive side. I've had fair (10-25%) luck with vigorous, own-root varieties (like White Lady Banks) by planting several cuttings 2-3 nodes deep under each of several glass jars in a moist starting box--shaded in warm weather--and gradually removing the obviously dead ones. I also have a cutting rose (apparently a Versilia) grown from a stem my wife removed from a bouquet my daughter had received and stuck in some dirt. Cuttings taken from this plant, in turn, root under jars at rates near 25-50%....See MoreMason jar?
Comments (13)Lucky_P, that's it exactly. I get away with propagating in the winter sun by leaving the cap off and pulling mulch up about halfway on the soda bottles. When warm spring weather comes, I have to pull the pots out and move to the cold greenhouse where the light is diminished by the covering I use. Are you familiar with the stuff used to cover the windows on chicken and rabbit houses here in the Ozarks? It has strands of fiberglass embedded in the vinyl. Lasts a good ten years and works fine for my purposes. I could save a lot of effort by building myself a raised bed of sawdust in the shade of a building and just sink pots in that...nah!...DH would kill me if I start anything else to clutter the yard.....unless I can convince him it's something he wanted all the time. ;O)...See MorePatented Roses and propagation
Comments (20)Here's the lowdown on patents: http://www.ipwatchdog.com/2014/07/26/how-long-does-a-patent-last/id=50534/ If you go to this site, you can look up when a plant was issued a patent, and therefore know when it expires: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/result.html?sort=relevance&srch=top&query_txt=AUSrimini&submit=&patents=on The rose shown in the search results is David Austin's 'Strawberry Hill', which has the "Varietal Denomination" of "AUSrimini". It's very difficult to find a plant if you don't search using the Varietal Denomination. You can usually find that listed on the HelpMeFind site, http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/plants.php, or on the breeder's website (They're listed for most of David Austin's on his site). Tony...See MoreRose propagation question
Comments (3)Is the rose you planted on its own roots? Then perhaps cover it with a two litre pop bottle without its cap until the risk of frost is gone. Was the rose grafted (was there a 'knot' above the roots) where the variety you bought is grown on another root stock? Then, if you planted that 'knot', the bud union, an inch or two below grade, you probably have no need of the bottle at all. I hope this is clear, Steve....See Moreanntn6b
