Michaelc0, I initially had thought that I waited too late to dig the bulbs, but after making an underground examination bulbs it looked to me like separation occurred befoe they were ready to be dug. It's possible the trigger was related to weather. In any case when it comes to usability, the separated bulbs are just as good as the others. Pertaining to advice on garlic growing .... I'm in Sunset Zone 28, you're in Sunset Zone 26. I simply plant in October and November and harvest in April. But this might not work for your area. I found a few web references that imply growing garlic in the deep south can be a bit of a challenge. However, it can be done as the link below indicates. I did find a link to Florida vegetable gardening planting guide, but it did not provide a specific dates for when to planting garlic. Hi Derbika and Tina My onions every year are different depending on where I got them or the weather... This year the ones that I got in Lowes turn out really good, Tina did you see the onions by the fence? I harvested those because they are not going to grow any bigger and I put them in the porch in a shady spot on top of 2 crates, the bottom is empty and the other full, you can line them with newspapers but is not necessary. They will dry there, do not cut any tops. Some I started to use them in cooking, others will be left to dry... The other set of onions that I got in another place still look like scallions so I let them stay in the ground till I can use them as such... And I also grew red onions from seed and they still look like scallions.:) I only put onions inside the house once they are completely dry and brush the dirt out with my hand and only wash them before I use them in the kitchen. Katib, you could plant your sprouted seeds in pots indoors to give them a safe start. Then when the plants are up and about and are less prone to attack by cutworms and other creeps, you could plant the pea plants out in your garden. Apparently, peas don't like to be transplanted, so you could make transplant pots from newspaper sheets that you roll and fold into pots. (Make the pots thin-walled, so they disintegrate quickly when planted in the garden soil.). Before transplanting the pea plants into your garden, soak the pots well to help the paper break down. You don't remove the pea plants from the newspaper pot; you plant pot and all and try not to disturb the roots. Once planted into moist soil, the newspaper pot would soften and rot to let roots grow in all directions. Or, you could make the paper pots without bottoms and pack the pots close together in a tray to prevent the soil from spilling out. Or you could plant your sprouted seeds in large tubs/planters/pots that you'd move outside when the pea plants have several true leaves or larger. I mean, pots large enough for the pea plants to grow in for the season. Many people have problems getting peas to grow, so a bit of experimenting may be the way to go to find a sure method that works for you. Hi rodvictoria, Planting herbs can be a little tricky! Herbs and spices grow best in warmth and direct sunlight. Try keeping your pot on the window sill in your kitchen or a similarly sunny space for convenience and results. But take a look at our Fix Herb Pots!
