What is the name of this tree? - Identification please.

I purchased this tree at houston garden center today because It was really pretty. Only issue is, nobody there knew what it was. Id like to know about it so I can care for it properly.

It's a Jatropha, but I'm not sure which one. Commonly limbed up and grown as a small, ornamental tree.

Thanks for the post on that tree. I had suspected it was either black cherry or chokecherry. Hoping for the latter as i would love to have chokecherry jelly. My favorite. Haven't had any luck finding any around this area. Thanks again. Sue

What was said above and I'd cut that down before it becomes a hazard. Not looking so good. You do not want it to develop into a large weak tree and split down the middle which it look slike it wants to do.

Can you take a photo without the flash? Also one from the side to make leaf arrangement easier to see? Right now it is tough to see any detail. Often young tree leaves don’t look like older versions of the same species, so it may be red maple, Acer rubrum. I have also heard maples with reddish foliage referred to as red maples, so consider Norway maple or Japanese maple. The red foliage types may have seedlings with red or green foliage.

This is a z 10-11 plant. I don't thing it will survive Houston's winters unless you protect it and then it is iffy. Good luck.

Petzold, how were you able to determine the species, and which one is it? I understand that some Jatropha are extratropical species, and wonder how one identifies which are tropical or subtropical and which aren't.

Definitely not a Sassafras. I think Rhizo probably had the genus right.

In the shrub forum, Gardengal has ID'd this evergreen shrub/small tree as Jatropha integerrima. So, it's marginal even in 10a. Cmcgalrd01 lives in the Houston area (zone 9, maybe high 8 in some outlying areas). Sounds like it's going to be a real stretch keeping it alive without bring it indoors in the winter or providing quite a bit of protection.
