Got a few things planted out in Z5- veggie patch

I started my veggie patch yesterday. Got out:

Lettuce

Spinach

Beets

Radishes

Cabbage

The spinach was a wash out last year, so I wanted to get that in ASAP this time, and the beets barely had much growth, but the packet said to sow as early in spring as the ground could be worked, so I figured I was probably 'late' so got those in, too.

Cauliflower waiting just a hair longer; it's a wee bit too small yet.

mine bave been in ground for more than a week. I planted seeds and then covered entire bed with plastic sheet for few days- WS with a twist- things germinated in the hurry...
now second batch of greens will go in- I stage them for better/ longer use

I put in a few of my lettuce, broccoli and spinach. I was too nervous to plant out the whole shebang.

I don't mean to be disagreeable, but I first learned about Jimsonweed through an article in the Reader's Digest, around 1980. A whole family had become violently ill after eating garden tomatoes for dinner. An investigation revealed that Jimsonweed growing in the garden had crossbred with the tomatoes. Their fruit was highly poisonous! I am here this evening because my husband asked me about a large weed that had sprung up on the edge of our tomato patch and, Googling it, I found it to be Jimsonweed! I will assume that, as it is the first specimen to grow in my garden, it has not had an opportunity to cross-pollinate or graft, but I will call the cooperative extension tomorrow, just to be on the safe side. Cowthree, I see that this post is at several years old. Did you ever have any further issues?

Oh my, sorry to hear about the ankle. Ouch! I live in zone 5 in Omaha, NE, but I grew up in NW Iowa. I am guessing you have rich black dirt. I was so surprised moving to NE to learn that not everyone has that pretty dirt...lots of clay in the soil here & it is orange/brown. What part of NW IA are you in? I grow Distant Drums, had 2 but lost one over the winter a few years back. I think it may be one that isn't as hardy. I also have Country Dancer. It has thrived and is about 4 foot wide and 3 foot tall right now...It is about 8-9 years old. Most of my roses are grafted and I plant the graft deeply (got that great advice here). I have around 75-80 roses. I usually lose about one a year, though this year we had such a mild winter, they all did very well. I don't do a lot to winter protect with so many roses. I generally let the oak leaves blow around them & call it good. Of course I will baby a few of my absolute favorites! But if you only have a few, I would mound up dirt around the base in the fall.

I cut down the pea foliage(mid July) and add compost, then transplant four week old broccoli and cauliflower. This gives me a second crop of broccoli+cauliflower which are harvested end of Sept. to first week of Oct. Summer lettuce transplants(slobolt) are interplanted among the four week old cole transplants. This gives me lettuce when tomatoes come in. June 1, I transplant squash or pepper plants in areas where I pick spinach. Spinach beds are done by mid-June and the other plants take over until frost. I've also used the old spinach space for a second fall cole crop...direct seeded. Pole beans can be planted June 1 on the outer edge of a pea bed where they will climb on bamboo poles. Beans come in about 60 days from germination and will go until frost. Bottom line, (but this is Z4) make sure you have transplants in by July 1 for fall, or at least seeded. Beets+carrots+lettuce. Light levels(the sun) start to get low here by mid-Aug. with shorter growing days.

Great idea Lisa! I am winging it - my coolest night temp for the next 10 days is 33 which will be tonite - after that, its all in the 40's. I think if these ws babies have survived the really chilly nights already - they will be fine out in the big bad world -they are tough survivors - and from my understanding, do better planted out than cooped up in a bottle too long.

I have lettuce out and some companion plants, I haven't sown the toms or others yet. Well I did DS some peas but that doesn't count, lol.

I planted out some peas, lettuce & pak choi I think last week -- the pak choi died, the lettuce doesn't look so good, but the peas look like they might make it. I think maybe I need more lasagna layers on the veggie bed.

I added more pak choi & lettuce seedlings yesterday -- we are getting 2 days of rain starting today. Fingers crossed.

Same here on that weather report. But the night-time temps are over 40 all week, so crossing fingers that we're over the worst of it.

I have been planting out cool season veggies for the past week and a half with mixed results. Lettuces, and spinach look great, but I had to replant some of the peas and beets. The peas I think just suffered from too many nights around the freezing mark without protection, and the beets probably would have done fine if I would have thinned them, instead of trying to separate the little sprout clusters. Oh, and my broccoli sprouts didn't make it either. Not sure if it's too late to sow more of the broccoli or not. I direct sowed parsnips, carrots, and radishes. The radishes started sprouting within a week, but the other two are slower germinators. Yesterday, I put out the Swiss chard sprouts too. I had to untangle some of the roots when I planted them, and some don't look too happy this morning. I'm holding off on planting out the cauliflower too, especially since the broccoli didn't do well.

The good news is that it's really supposed to warm up this week, temps in the 70's, and lows in the upper 30's, so things should start taking off now.

Can't wait for that first fresh salad!!!

I would say it's not too late to start your broccoli. Prior to this year, I didn't pay any attention to 'cool season' crops, and I planted my veggie patch according to the usual & customary around here: Anytime before or around Memorial day. So I did the broccoli, and it worked just fine even at that late date (I believe I started them WS style likely early- mid-May for planting out around Memorial Day).
