Chinese Pink Garlic with scapes?
Comments (4)Conversely my Turbans which are supposed to bolt, all except 2, didn't. Cold spells sometimes seem to encourage what normally are softnecks to bolt. That is probably what happened to yours. I think an abnormally hot spell here tripped up my Turbans. I did get nice if relatively small bulbs that seem to be curing just fine. The rest of my hardnecks are still standing tall and nice and green except for some brown tips from that hot spell....See Moregarlic scape sellers in SW MI/NW IN area?
Comments (5)Unless someone here lives in the same area and frequents the Farmer's Markets I doubt you'll get an answer. Can't you just call the local FM and ask them? That's what we do here. All the local markets here keep a list of currently offered products. Late for them down here. Last Saturday only one vendor had them and only a small amount. Otherwise you can order them online from garlic growers like BJ 's Gourmet Garlic Farm. Dave...See MoreGarlic Scape Pesto
Comments (5)I added 1/3 cup of sunflower seeds, and changed the way they said to blend it ( adding the olive oil last) - but this is the recipe i used. 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese or other sharp Italian cheese 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice, adjusted to taste 1/4 pound roughly chopped scapes 1/2 cup olive oil salt to taste Puree scapes, olive oil, and juice in a blender or food processor until nearly smooth. (You can make a smooth paste if you prefer, but most people like a little texture in the pesto.) Gently stir in the cheese or gingerly pulse the cheese into the mixture; take it easy as you mix in the cheese to avoid making the pesto gummy by overblending. Taste and then adjust juice and salt to taste. Store in the refrigerator to use within two or three days; freeze for longer storage....See MoreGarlic scapes be cut
Comments (4)I hear that about being too hot & sticky, OldDutch... but this is finally my chance to get something done, so I've got to put up with it. Fortunately the house has AC, so I can go in to cool down every hour or so (like I'm doing right now). Just cut off my scapes today; they are much later than usual this year. Only the second time this year the ground in the rural plot has been dry enough to walk on without gathering mud. Still haven't been able to weed, I'm too far behind on the home gardens to get to it. Where did I put that "round tuit", I could use it right about now... :-) Wish I'd been able to lay down mulch, but I planted very late last year, and in a hurry. Rain delayed planting for so long this year, that everything growing now started as transplants indoors, under lights. Squash, beans, okra - everything. Nothing planted in the rural garden yet other than the garlic. I'm still hoping it stays dry there long enough for me to turn the weeds over in time to plant something. I've got half a tray of gherkin plants ready to go, for making pickles... these are true gherkins, small egg-shaped things 2-3" long, crunchier than any cukes I've grown. They grow very quickly, so I've still got time to get a fairly good crop....See Morebloosquall
