Rose standard dead...rose growing back at old site...Dr. Huey??

What rose is typically used as the standard portion of a rose tree? I had to dig my The Fairy rose standard up after it got rose gall at the union point on the standard. Now I have a rose returning from the soil. I doubt this is The Fairy...but would it be Dr. Huey or something else?

Just Wondering....

Dr. Huey regrows here from root divisions all the time, even if only from a pot sitting on the soil.

Here are my thoughts (Ann what do you think?) I would suspect they looked good because they weren't pushing yet. They last week we suddenly hit 80 degrees, they start to push new growth, cell walls that were damaged by the cold temps in Feb explode and the canes die. Personally I'd cut the plants back hard to focus energy and spur new growth. I realize that's painful but for us it works. Roses have a limited amount of carbs they live off of during the winter. If we got warm, cold, warm, cold they use them up quicker because during those warm spurts they start to leaf out and burn carbs to do it. So if we go through too many cycles they simply run out of "gas" before the big spring push. This is pure speculation but I wonder if not watering and forcing the root system to go deep and wide helps because that is more carbs stored under the ground away from the cold. On my roses at home I've had zero die back and they never get watered outside of rain. At the nursery the older plants have had very little but the younger plants are being affected.

This thread makes me smile. Jackie, I love the fact that you are living and gardening in a place that holds so much history for your family. I have an own-root Peace in my garden, a virus-indexed plant that got from Vintage in 2008. It was originally planted in my Rose Field among similar HTs. Life happened, my Rose Field grew over with weeds and invasives and I didn't have what it took to keep it up at the time, and Peace seemed to be lost. Last spring, I waded through that section of the garden and discovered that Peace was still there ... small and scrawny, but very much alive. I carefully dug it up, and it is now planted in my front yard HT garden, with other own-root HTs, where it receives much better care and it is thriving. These HTs seem to need more in the way of nutrition, so it gets fed regularly. I do my best to be as good as I can about keeping to my twice-monthly fungicide schedule, too. In return for my care and attention, Peace is growing and doing very, very nicely ... producing the large, bright green foliage that I think of when I imagine Peace. My goal for this plant is to keep it healthy and vigorous and to bud a copy of it onto rootstock to see what a virus-free Peace can do when grown as it was originally intended to be. When the plant gets bigger (it's about a foot-and-a-half tall right now), I will propagate own-root plants and get them out of here into other homes who will also care for and preserve them. My take-away from the "don't mix modern with old or English" was that the two are often treated differently, and look better separated. Many people treat HTs and Floribundas as bedding plants -- hard-pruning them every year, planting in groups of the same variety for emphasis. The old and English roses are more often left to grow a bit more wild. In habit, they don't match. BUT....not everyone treats their HTs and Floribundas as "bedding plants", so it's not so much "don't mix the types" as it is "don't mix the gardening styles in the same bed." In other words, "neat and clipped" roses might look odd right next to "arching and billowing" roses. At least, that's how I took it. But, in the end, it's all about personal preferences. The other consideration is color clashing between some of the brighter colored moderns and the softer colored old and English roses. But that isn't something inherent -- there are plenty of non-harsh moderns that will blend well with the old and English roses. Ultimately, I realize that Austin's books, while very informative, are also aiming to nudge favor toward his own roses and preferences. I am learning so much from this thread. There is such great knowledge and experience here. It's really interesting to hear about people's different experiences. Jeri...most of my Austin's were bare root plants purchased from local nurseries. Does that mean they are probably California or Texas grown (doesn't Austin grow his US roses in Texas?) What got me thinking about this topic was watching an Episode of The Victorian Flower Garden (on YouTube). It talks all about how rose grafting was done 100 hundred years ago in England, in this case they were taking about rose standards, which were all the rage at the time. "Briar men" would harvest wild roses to be used at the rootstock for the standards. It was extremely interesting, and it got me thinking about grafting. England is a small country and I imagine that a single rootstock works well all over the country. America is much larger and more geographically diverse (as well as vastly different climates). It makes sense to have regional rose growers who provide plants with rootstocks suited to those areas. I didn't realize (or really know the difference) that there were places to buy roses grafted onto certain rootstocks. I was re-reading that incredible thread by Fragrancnutter called "fragrant roses that produce abundant perfect cut blooms" and she says that she makes sure all her roses are on Fortuniana because it gives her bigger plants with more blooms. Now, she's in Australia, has lots of heat, and is a superlative gardener. I live in the PNW, have not much heat, and am an average gardener (and a rose growing newbie). Where we are similar is in our warm winters (I am in a solid zone 9 now) and maybe our soils. I garden on glacial till which is incredibly fast draining. Even with liberal organic amendments my garden requires a shocking amount of irrigation for roses to thrive in it. This took me 15 years to figure out :) I would like to be able to back off on the water (I have my own well thankfully) over time as the roses become more established, and be mindful about buying roses that will thrive in my particular garden and soil. I have many own root antique tea roses that I think will like my mild winters, quick draining soil, and warm microclimate created by a large gravel driveway on one side and the road on the other. If Fortuniana will help me deal with these particular conditions, that would be great. A rose that naturally enjoys heavier soil will not enjoy my garden :)

Ronda, I have a sentence in my notebook about rose standards, which evidently came from the Maryland Rose Society website:

"The understock used by Jackson & Perkins generally, according to Mike Cady,
Horticulturist for J&P, is a double graft of De la Grifferaie (Hmult, deep pink, Vibert, 1845) onto
Dr. Huey (LCl dark red, Thomas, 1914) which, in turn, has the chosen variety grafted onto it.
Sometimes they use Dr. Huey alone for the root and main cane stock onto which the chosen
variety is grafted."

I've never seen a De la Griff standard commercially here, but it's considered best to bud De la Griff onto rootstock because it suckers so badly if not properly de-eyed.

All I see in California are miserable, sun-burned and sun-scalded Dr. Huey standards.

Hmmm...I do believe I purchased this from J&P. I wonder if this means that I might have De la Grifferaie coming back???
If so, I know nothing of this rose....

As Mike said above, tree roses are almost always composed of 2 grafts that join 3 distinct 'pieces': The rootstock, the interstock (trunk) & the scion (the portion that produces the bloom). If your plant was a 36-inch rose tree from J&P it's almost certain that the interstock was Grifferaie grafted onto Dr Huey rootstock. If it was a 24-inch tree, it's conceivable that both the roots & the interstock were Dr Huey, altho Grifferaie is often used on those too.

If you planted the tree deeply enough, I suppose it would be possible for the interstock to strike roots, but I think that's unlikely. I seriously doubt that there's any possibility De la Grifferaie will be the variety that comes back in your garden. I agree with berndoodle that you can expect Dr Huey to be making another of his unwelcome house calls.

Ok that is what I wanted to know. Since it seems certain that Dr. Huey was the rootstock I won't bother to wait to be sure.

I don't care for Dr. Huey but would have waited around to see if I had Grifferaie if there was any chance. When I dug the rootball up the interstock had in no way rooted in the surrounding soil. The new growth I see is almost assuredly from the rootstock. Dr. Huey--yuck.

De la Grifferaie is a hybrid multiflora, with dark green leaves with a matte surface. Here's a closeup of the foliage when it's all fresh and sweet in the springtime. By the end of the season, it doesn't look this nice.

It looks nothing like Dr. Huey, usually notable for massive quantities of powdery mildew, green canes with scattered or few prickles, somewhat shiny leaves and, too often, RMV.
