Ken Asmus, at OIKOS Tree Crops, in Kalamazoo MI, offers a number of seed-grown hybrid oaks - some of which will have Q.muehlenbergii in their background. Q.macrocarpa and some of the southwestern oak species (and their hybrids) can tolerate high pH, as well.
Additionally, if you've got an interest in oaks, visit the International Oak Society and join up - members often share plant materials - especially at the IOS conventions; I've gotten some neat species & hybrid acorns from the IOS acorn swap in the past.

Perhaps I was just misreading the listings at OIKOS, of species for sale, but while I saw a number of Q. macrocarpa hybrids, and pure strain Q.muehlenbergii, I didn't see any Q.muehlenbergii hybrids - and I have heard that Q. macrocarpa, doesn't have very good fall folage and like most white oaks are intolerate of high pH ( thus one of the reasons that I have just glossed over them ).

As for southwestern oaks, I could collect some localy, but they are all Q. gambelli, and just do not obtain any real size ( I'm average hight but can see over the top of most of them ).

If your looking for color why don't you try Q. buckleyi or a hybrid with Q. shumardii?

Q. robur can take alkaline soil. There is a hybrid with Q. alba that gives color.

Q. muhlenbergii does not have the greatest color either most years. There is a fellow in New Mexico that claims one of his strains give color.

Agreed that Q.macrocarpa doesn't do much in the way of fall color - but it's great the other 50 weeks of the year. One of the features I've always seen it touted for is its performance over a wide range of acid & alkaline soil pHs - if you look at its widespread distribution, there's no doubt in my mind that there are strains/biotypes that can handle alkaline soils.
OIKOS has offered, from time to time, a 'chinkabur' selection - may not have it listed in this year's catalog, but might have it available, if you email Ken specifically about it.

Like dricha, I've never noticed anything but yellow-->brown on any of the local chinkapin oaks, but have seen reference to a SW strain that supposedly exhibits some red fall color.

Don't know how scarlet oak(Q.coccinea) or any of the red oak group - or hybrids in that section - perform on alkaline soils, but scarlet is a standout for red fall color here. I have an open-pollenated seedling of Q.x runcinata(Bottome oak - N.Red X Shingle)growing here that rivals scarlet oak for red-purple fall color.

I was questioning the color aspect as I was hopeful to find a Q. bicolor or Q. alba crossed with enough Q.muehlenbergii, to give a year round tree that was alkaline tolerant.

I believe Cedar Valley Liners (OK) grows a few of the newer oak hybrids - their catalog may have descriptions and should be available on their website. They may also be able to steer you to local nurseries who carry their products.

What can you tell me about about Q.shumardii and Q.palustris?

Are there any Q.palustris x Q.shumardii hybrids?
What about shumardii x muehlenbergii hybrids?

The deeper I dig into this, the more I am hearing that even for an oak, Q. macrocarpa is considered slow growing, is this true?

Pin, Shumard, and Scarlet Oaks all prefer lower pH soils. From what I've observed of the 3, Shumard is somewhat more adaptable to higher pH soils, but I have still seen some very chlorotic Shumards in soils that have only moderately high pH - may be related to provenance. Northern Pin (ellipsoidalis) is supposed to be somewhat more tolerant than palustris of higher pH, but still would probably not perform very well at your location if your pH is high. I'm not aware of any Pin x Shumard hybrids, but some of the other posters may know more. Shumard and Chinkapin are in separate families (red vs white oak family) and wouldn't hybridize as far as I know.

My observations are that macrocarpa is relatively slow growing under most conditions.

dricha: you're probably thinking of Dave M. in CA who has the "Oaktopia" website that includes the El Capitan oak. I just happened across it doing a web search.

Q.macrocarpa - at least the southern/western provenance selections, are among the fastest-growing of any seedling trees I've started here - typically put on 2+ ft of growth every year, in 2 or 3 flushes - far outstripping any of the red/black oak varieties I've planted.
Bur oaks from acorns sent from NY, Manitoba, and northern IA seem to be much less vigorous in their growth - and produce acorns that are MUCH smaller.
I've got some Q.bicolor and Q.x schuetti seedlings that are running neck-and-neck with most of the bur oaks.

I guess my concern with Q. macrocarpa from southern provenance is length of growing season issues ( least wise what I have read is that you don't want to use specimens from areas with dramatically different growing season length ), and we can see as few as 100 days from last hard frost to first ( but it may warm up for another 6 weeks before true cool weather sets in ).

Is differences in growing season length really the issue I hear it is?

I have bur oak seedlings from provenances as disparate as TX and Manitoba. One row, planted at the elementary school my kids attended, has trees grown from acorns sent or collected from IN, ID, MO, NY, KY, TX, and Manitoba. All mature their acorns here in southern west-central KY(about 70 mi NW of Nashville, TN), but the TX-origin tree is much later ripening, and it's still in full green leaf when the other trees in that row have either colored up(such as they do) or are bare of leaves.
Ken Asmus, at OIKOS, in Kalamazoo MI has TX and OK-origin trees growing in his seed orchard; I presume they're doing OK.

I planted a chinkapin oak at the neighborhood park a few years ago and a couple years ago, I noticed this red fall color -

Last fall wasn't really a good year for fall color for most trees. It rained excessively. Dramatic temperature drop in September/October. I recall this tree grower saying that he'd never seen that early fall color (by 2 or 3 weeks?).

Anyway, last year this chinkapin tree grew 6-7 feet. Not Sure how much it grew this year. Maybe 3-4 feet? I'll keep an eye on this tree to see if it produces red fall color again. It's the only chinkapin that I saw with red color. Most had ugly yellow-brownish color.

I have been talking to OIKOS, and if I am understanding it correctly, while they have some chink hybrids, they are not producing well enough for sales. Any other ideas of where I might be able to locate chinkapin x bur oak crosses?

I don't think I have seen such a dark red ( burgundy? ) color on an oak. If that tree continues to produce like that, it might be worth developing as a specific cultivar.

There is a new variety called "Triple Crown" (robur x muehlenbergii x macrocarpa), but I can't find much info on it. May have been introduced by Heritage Trees (IL)? Cedar Valley Liners currently grows it, and they may be able to give you local nurseries that have purchased the liners from them.

No luck - I found a reference to "Triple Crown" on the web, and when I called Cedar Valley, they had it but the folks of the only name of a nursery that Ceder Valley gave me, had never heard of that variety.

Does anyone else have a recommendation?

My chinkapin has repeatedly pumped out maroon with hints of red in autumn, only problem is that it lasts less than a week to two before the foliage turns brownish and drops.
J. Frank Schmidt nursery has produced a hybrid between Q. macrocarpa and Q. robur that does quite well here in alkaline clay (with decent surface drainage). Might look at that one, but fall color has been brownish yellow.

I have an 'Ooti' seedling, purchased from OIKOS, back around '96 - listed at that time as a hybrid of Q.macrocarpaXroburXvirginiana - but I'm more inclined to think muehlenbergii is the third species in the mix than virginiana; or, as this is an open-pollenated seedling, it might have had a Q.muehlenbergii pollen parent. I see nothing in foliage or acorn morphology to support virginiana anywhere in its heritage. Each flush of new growth has a very pleasing bronze/copper color that persists for quite some time, until leaves reach full size, at which time they green up; fall color is the typical yellow-brown of macrocarpa and muehlenbergii.

Hybridization of the white oaks, particularly in arboretum or mixed-species 'orchard' plantings can be rampant. I bought and purchased 8 or 10 BurEnglish seedlings in the mid-90s; have grafted most of them over to the original 'McDaniel' macrocarpaXrobur selection, but one still has several branches below the graft - foliage on these 'understock' branches leaves no doubt that the pollen parent of that particular acorn was probably Q.gambelli or possibly Q.turbinella.
