How unusual is that! Is it very damp in that spot? I thought mushrooms needed really wet conditions to grow. I wouldn't think the rose would like it that wet.

That was funny! Gean, you always make me laugh with your wicked sense of humor (just as naughty as Camp, aka Suzy). My kid always urge me to write stories for children when I concocted juicy fairy tales before bedtime. I should embark on a string of novels, with your help and Camp ... to write "The Three Roses Stooges" string of trashy novels.

Gean...That is too funny. Down here at the bottom of So. Puget Sound, we are featuring large white mushrooms. A few years ago, we mulched this garden bed with mushroom compost. It's been interesting fall and spring seeing what develops.

Life's full of sad things, Strawberry, so I try to find as much fun and joy as I can in all of the good things there are in life, with my friends and family. Glad the picture provided a few laughs - and my joke was not as bad as zaphod's - groan!!

That bed is mulched with wood chips we ground up this summer. I read that the mushrooms showing up are a sign that it's good soil but I need to read more. I'm inclined to believe it, though and am planning to leave them alone. So no dwarves with axes!

There was this Korean lady who ate the white mushroom on her lawn and ended up getting a liver transplant. I used to spend $$$ on fluffy mulch, until they sprouted disgusting mushroom. Two types: 1) bright yellow foamy froth 2) tiny ones just like Gean's ... they both gross me out.
Now I use free horse manure, the pile is bigger than a one-story house. The straw & wood chips bedding which horse manure has lime, so zero mushroom sprouting. It looks really good like the $40 per cubic yard mulch that I used to buy. Horse manure is fluffy, it dries out fastest after a rain, even faster than dirt. I don't get blackspots on roses mulched with horse manure, but I get BS on the 2 roses NOT mulched. Check out these pics. taken last month when we had week-long rain .. zero blackspots, mulched with horse manure:

I don't know, Pam, whether they are edible or not. There are mushroom clubs here that go foraging for the abundant mushrooms around. I read someone died here recently from eating one that they shouldn't have. I would like to learn more about them though.

Strawberry, I think that the spores blow in on the wind and aren't necessarily in the mulch. Two beds with identical mulch six feet apart - one bed covered with the mushrooms, the other with none. The first one gets a lot more wind, though. And that's what I have read, the spores blow in.

I use manure; there are a lot of horse stables in the area. I also use the woodchips and leaves we have, alfalfa, and even a load of llama manure which a friend gave us this summer. No weed seeds in llama poops. BS isn't much of a problem anyway, so I don't worry about it.

Thanks Gean, for the confirmation of animal manure and not much blackspots on your land. Someone else was raising questions about whether horse manure works with blackspots - that's why I posted my pic. taken after the frost killed my tomatoes... you can see dead tomatoe branches on the horse manure I used.

Also Kippy suggested that I separate horse poop from the brown straw & woodchips bedding. It's impossible, they are well-composted ... plus I like the look of brown bedding, it helps keeping my roses freed of blackspots after prolonged rain. My roses are healthy & blooms well with the stable in my cold zone uses lime to deodorize their indoor stall. Below is a picture of Francis Blaise, Liv Tyler, Evelyn all crunched up, with horse manure bedding, taken mid-October with constant rain.

ummm, no, I'm not confirming that animal manures have an effect on blackspot, Strawberry. I don't know if that is true or not. The types of roses I grow are not very susceptible to blackspot and the temperatures here are often below the required temperatures for the blackspot spores to germinate. I attribute my lack of bs mostly to the disease resistance of the roses I grow.

I got some really wild looking mushrooms from the standards I moved from the house up the street. They looked like they belonged in a cartoon. But no way would I eat them!

Strawberry, I thought you said you could tell the manure from the wood shavings in the other thread, figured the non wood shavings are better uncomposted rather than the woodshavings. Well composted and it should all be very similar dark and not obvious what the source once was.

Hi Kippy: The chunks of poop break down fast in the rain, but the wood shavings take longer to break down, thus it's impossible to separate them. I can't get the same manure as you do ... it's the best I can do here. The stable can't customize just poop only for me, and I can't separate each poop chunk from the bedding. However, it saves me lots of money when I use horse manure. In my last house I wasted money on pine bark nuggets as mulch, and had the worst blackspots.

In this present house I wasted money ordering mulch, the neighbor complained it stank like corn husk, then I got mushrooms growing. I'm glad I found free horse manure as mulch, no more mushrooms here.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Ralph Moore about those things. When asked if he liked mushrooms, he shivered and responded, "I spray to get rid of fungi. Why would I want to put it in my mouth?" Kim

Strawberry, we can get free mulch from our transfer-station dropped by the dump truck load. Only....I know what I drop off in my green waste can and not a chance I want that stuff back!! It is a lot of work "picking" the poop....but I figure I am skipping the weeds.

That and the smell of the county mulch can knock your socks off! The avo orchard down the road from me is a favorite place for the county dump the stuff, they brought convoys of it last year and people all over this end of town started calling the news and 911 for the horrid smell.

My father went wild mushroom hunting a few years back and had to have his stomach pumped--twice. He didn't get the idea the first time. For the next Christmas, my mother gave him this wall hanging with yellow, chartreuse and orange mushrooms on it. My father didn't find it amusing, but his six children thought it was hysterical.

I love all those mushroom jokes, esp. the one from witty Ralph Moore. My kid used to devour mushrooms when she was 3, until I was dumb enough to educate her with books on fungi .... she got grossed out and never eat another mushroom.

I wasted at least $500 buying mulch, until I found free horse manure. My village grind up trees and leave a HUGE PILE of FREE bark mulch, taller than one-story house. It's within walking distance but I don't like that stuff:

1) it's not finely ground like the $40 per cubic yard that I used to buy. It's coarsely grinded, and pricked my feet when I wear slipper in the summer. My neighbors continue to pay $$$ for better mulch, despite a free pile nearby.

2) I got poison-ivy from using the village's free mulch, had to see the doctor twice for medications.

3) Mushrooms growing on the mulch just like Gean's picture. There are even uglier types like the frothy foamy yellow ones in humid weather.

I like horse manure on bedding as mulch, no smell, zero mushrooms, and looks like the expensive mulch I used to get. We grew up in Michigan on 5-acres land and used cow-manure and chicken-manure as mulch .... and grew the sweetest veges.
