Divesting Myself of Many Roses in London, Ontario

I am divesting myself of many rose bushes, partially because of poor sunlight, partially because of waning interest and time--- many would do better elsewhere. I apologize for not making a list of what varieties there are up for grabs, but there are big and small: HTs, floribundas, climbers, ramblers, rugosas, old garden roses and minis. Did I miss anything? I might even make a list yet. Ask what I might have.

Well, yes, you did miss some things . . . How are folks to participate in your divestiture? Do they travel to your garden? If so, do the roses need to be dug? Are you shipping? Are you interested in transferring the roses only to other Canadian gardeners? At this point, God only knows what you have available. One could inquire indefinitely about varieties. If you're serious about finding new homes for your roses, it seems to me that preparing that list and making it available are essential first steps.

Thanks for your questions. I wasn't thinking clearly, or maybe was too weary.

No, I won't be shipping. I guess I was imagining local folks would come and take what they want. I will probably dig them up for them.

Hi Jeff, great to see you are joining the group. I have very little to offer since my gardens are only on their second year but mostly wanted to attend for the socializing. Quite a few of us met last year at Deb's house for the swap. We are glad to have you aboard and I think with Signet hosting, we are in for a real treat. She's going to show us "Hosta Choice Gardens" near her home but even better we get to see her vast array of plants she has collected and nurtured. As for me, I don't know that I have anything you might like but if you have an extra Kentucky Coffee Tree seedling, I'd be happy to take one off your hands. Just an aside Jeff...I'm still hoping for those bladdernut seeds to sprout. My wintersowing didn't do well at all and those pots that did sprout are only just sprouting now so I really don't see the benefit of doing the wintersowing at all. Barb

Please double check that I've got the details right from all the posts: Gardeng8 I'm looking forward to your: monkshood, Karl Forster grass, obsidian heuchera, ws siberian wallflower and Yvonne's salvia (any chance that you could find more to trade so I could get a 2nd or 3rd one? I'm getting some from Jeff too, but if possible I'd like to have enough to put some in my front yard too to give the other hummer in the neighbourhood somewhere to drink (she gets chased off by my regular gal), I'd give up the heuchera for that :-). Hi Signet, I've potted up an alcea rugosa (?) butter yellow hollyhock with fig leaves for you. My downy wood mint seems to have disappeared too. I'm half way through potting things up :-p I've been potting up other stuff for my plant sale the following week. Thank goodness for my new potting bench that Matt finished on Saturday!! Now I can do 30 pots in the time it used to take to do 10 _and_ still be able to stand up straight! Thankfully the next half of the potting up is the easy stuff. The 17 small plants from cuttings which won't take long once I get my kitchen back. Looks like it won't be so crazy hot tomorrow, and even a bit cloudy, so I can send the houseplants outside for their summer vacations! Because of the fear of lily beetles, I'll just bag the lilies the day before the swap with no dirt attached. I had hoped to get the cannas and dahlias planted this weekend, but it was too hot, and the weeds in that section of the front yard have gone nuts. WMC1 & NavyGirl01 - is their anything on my list that you would trade for a green or a non pink echinacea? I just found a Stokes blue aster as I was weeding & digging up the Yellow toadflax for Lilac.

Hi Everyone, I hope u all had a nice Mother's Day! Son and family came over here on Sunday and we had a nice time. Little Rose is soooo cute and is learning new words every day, I love having her around, she sure livens up the place. *S* While Rosie and her mom had a nap son and I went out and worked in the garden. It is so hard to get him over here that I take advantage when he is able to come over. Monday was a special pick up garbage day and we could throw everything out but cars and tires. So that meant a lot of clean was done in the yard. We pruned down a lot of branches off the Shurbert cherry tree and found out that it has some kind of disease. I think it is black knot, there is big black areas on different branches, that is sad and it is such a pretty tree. White flowers in spring, then the reddish leaves and red berries in the summer. We also took down some large branches on the crabapple so I could get under it to work without taking my head off. *L* Also took the wood from some of the old garden beds to the street and an old dwarf cranberry bush that I killed last year. Pulling that one out was the hardest and we had to stop after that. I will be planting hostas there after I fill up the big hole it left. Son kept telling me to go into the house, but I know it is easier with smeone helping u in the garden so I stayed out and helped him. I should of listened to him though as I have been in bed for the past two days. I thought I was doing ok, but I guess my heart and back have different ideas. I sure could do with a body replacement. *LOL* I transplanted a few tomatoes tonight into bigger containers and seeded some zucs, sunflowers and cukes. I will have to tranplant the buttercrunch lettuce tomorrow too, I'm late at getting that done. I am running out of space. I had to add another windowsill box on the north window just so I could put my tomatoes on the east window sill. I was hoping that May was going to be warm so I could start moving things into the porch, but it is 1C tonight and is suppose to be cold for the next few days. Gale, I'm glad u had a good time with the gals, but ya didn't say what kind of plants u bought... *S* I'm surprised that u still have ice and snow around your place too. I thought yours would of been gone before ours was. Does your pond have a liner in it? Or is it a natural pond? Am wondering how the fish survived in a pond with a liner? And u got tadpoles? Very kewl! My waterlilies are growing in the basement but son was too sore after pulling out that bush to put them into the pond, so they will just have to wati. I wish I could get the fish in the pond too, I am always scared I'm going to kill them if I put them in too early. Sure would make it easier having them in the pond. Gale, sounds like your greenhouse is working out great. Have u ever tried to get some old Culligan water bottles and fill those with water in the greenhouse? I bet ya they would hold in the heat well too. Hi kelly, did u buy any plants at the get together? What are SpringSow bottles? "We don't need a cart?" *LOL* Yeah right! I bet with the 3 of u, u could of used 2 carts. *L* Here are a few of my spring flowers, I hope the cold temps tonight didn't kill them. I can never remember what these are called, Star of Bethlehem pops into my head, but I don't know if that is right or not. I just think they are pretty. Lots more of the scillia have come up and they make a very pretty site too. and here are some of the marsh marigolds, they are just starting to bloom Take care Debbie :-)

I'd love to adopt some but USA residents should know that you won't be able to bring them across the border without phytosanitary certifications.

Hi- thanks for your generous offer. I suggest that you contact your local rose society if you are mainly reaching out to local people. I'm sure you'll have plenty of takers. For those of us far away and unable to take advantage, your list is just a tantalizing tease! I would be happy to relieve you of Double D, Abraham Darby, Hot Cocoa... but boxing and shipping would be a fair bit of work on your part. At least I'm on the right side of the 49th.

Hi Steve: If the heading of your post is "Free roses in London, Ontario", it would show up in a few days whenever people google, "free roses in London, Ontario".

My husband sells a few stuff locally by listing it on eBay, or local garage sale web-site. Best wishes to your endeavor.

Thanks Donald, I have, and some 8 or 10 roses have been taken or spoken for, astonishingly to me some of the largest ones.

Strawberry Hill, that's a great idea. I may just repost.

A friend who has lost interest in many of her 400 roses has invited people to come and dig up her roses on a particular day the last two years, advertised well in advance by e-mail to members of our local rose society. She also advertises in a rose forum. People come from far and near (but Sweden is a small country so not very far by North American standards) and make a day of it, bringing picknick baskets. I dug up my new Cl. American Beauty in this garden last year, having lost the old one.

If you have any roses left in early spring, I'd be happy to come and dig them out. I'm in southern Ontario. Bit of a drive to London, but worth it if there are enough left. Too late for me now, though as the ground getting too hard. Generous offer.

If Steve's Rosa Glauca is already spoken for, let me know and I can send you a young bare-rooted own-root specimen. I also have another larger one in a pot.

Only 2 dozen roses were taken last fall, so I renovated the rose beds. Rosa glauca has a new home in one of them. Maybe it will do well. Maybe not; then, it will go.
