Garlic stored in garage - down to 20 below - sprouting great
Comments (0)So - I couldnt get all of my garlic in last fall that I got from a local grower (Red Toch and German Red). I planted about 120 cloves. I had about 2 bulbs left and some random cloves that ended up being stored in the garage...easily subjected to some 10 to 20 below temps this winter in MN. I went to go throw them out a couple weeks ago - assuming they had rotted etc... and at least half were starting to sprout. I couldn't believe it. I quickly found room for them any they are growing great. Just any fyi for everyone that worries about storing garlic to cold for the winter....See MoreMy store bought garlic has sprouted
Comments (2)I will share a summary of what I've read on other forums and websites... Garlic cloves can be planted either in the ground or in a container. If you have an entire bulb, separate each clove, and plant them 6 to 8 inches apart. Like all bulbs, each one should be planted with the pointed side up (where the green sprout comes from). There should be 3 inches from the root end (bottom) of the clove to the top of the soil. Allow the plant to flower. Once the flower has died and 2/3 of the green has become brown, dig up the entire plant. Each clove will have produced an entire bulb of garlic. Save whatever cloves you wish to plant again, and cook with the rest. Best of luck!...See MoreStore-bought tomatoes sprouted! Check it out!
Comments (6)I had a pickling cucumber do this to me last fall/early winter. I let the cuke get yellow on the vine before harvesting it and then I kept it inside for a couple of months to allow it to mature more. I must have left it too long because when I cut into it, it had some little sprouts inside. Not to this extent though. Rodney Edit: I should mention that I was saving seeds from the cucumber which is why I let it get mature. Comments (8)I store my garlic in the kitchen which though a bit cooler than some other rooms is never less than about 60-65. My hardnecks store quite well into the new year, but then they are never cooled except those that get replanted, and then only after they are in the ground. I get few garlics sprouting in storage, but I do get some dried up cloves, even then not all the cloves in most bulbs dry out either. I was able to find enough good cloves in one hardneck variety to plant a decent bed last June from a preceding late July harvest. Although most of the cloves had dried out (no bulb was 100% good, although most had 1 or 2 good still well plumped cloves), I still got a 100% stand of those that hadn't dried out. I think it is too much cool or cold during storage that triggers premature sprouting. I have the best luck storing my well cured garlic warm (room temperature) rather than cool....See Morepaquebot
