Comments (40)Campanula, the thrill for me to find a decent rose at any store in Florida is because I think the box stores and even the local nurseries have bought into the idea that roses don't grow in Florida. One would think the growers would do a little homework and find out about new resistant varieties and old ones that do well here before they choose their crops. They're loaded with KO's, Drifts and Flower Carpet (not resistant to BS in my experience). At Lowe's the few "classic" roses in 2-gallon pots are beat up and mostly not labeled ($7 - $9) or labeled 'red rose', yellow rose', 'pink rose' at Walmart. The local nursery wants $20 - $25 for them in better condition but not great, more if they're on Fortuniana. Since the advent of KO's, other roses have mostly disappeared. I don't think I've ever seen bagged roses at Lowe's. I'm also sure there are many more gardeners per capita in the UK than in the US, so your demand is much higher. I must admit that putting a 2-gallon rose in the ground is quite exhilarating compared to a band. Talk about instant gratification!! I saw a video online yesterday on how to plant a bareroot rose and was amazed at the huge size of the roots. Made the bagged rose I just bought look sick. So I guess there is truth in the old adage that you get what you pay for. Thankfully, roses are tough most of the time. Comments (29)Just a suggestion...I've grown Angel Face roses for over 20 years in southern Nevada and northern California. They love lots of morning sun and don't like to go to bed wet! Water early in the morning if possible. Most importantly I would suggest carefully digging up your plant, re-digging the hole and fill it with fresh peat moss/potting soil. (what if a neighbor cat or your dog is doing their business too close to the plant?) Make sure you cut away all bad leaves and dying buds as soon as you see them and put them in the trash as far away from the plant as possible. I got so many blooms from roses in so. NV each month you would have to seen it to believe me. Those were the best as they had all day sun. My CA roses didn't get the early morning sun and it was a struggle to get them to all grow evenly and get 10% of the buds I got with my roses in so. NV. You don't want to put it in a smaller pot if you want it to catch up to your others. I also douse my plants with nitrogen and my roses love miracle grow. My iris's are chest high and I over watered them too. Good luck!...See Morepurple or lavender roses
Comments (32)One that has been surprisingly prolific and healthy for me has been Pillow Talk, that I got when Cliff from Eurodesert sold his garden plants last year. Pillow Talk has happily survived my zone 5 winters and put out frequent reblooms of some nicely double mauve roses on a low growing plant. I consider this rose exactly what I think of when people say "mauve" - sort of a dusty pinkish purple that was popular in carpets in my grandparents' youth (certainly my grandmother had that color all over her house). The pictures on HMF are mostly from Beth, and mine has stayed the dusky purple with cream highlights rather than the hot pink in one photo. Only available from Vintage on HMF but we still have hopes for some form of survival from Vintage in years to come. Cynthia...See MoreEbb Tide vs Reines des Violletts
Comments (4)I also would love to see what people have to say about this comparison, I have recently added RDV to my list of must try's, I have Ebb Tide right now, and out of all my 12 in-ground roses, it has had the most trouble getting established, (all of my roses are in their first year). For a while I thought it was a goner, but just last week it sprouted something like 3 new basal canes and 3 or 4 new off-shoots from old canes after sitting there doing absolutely nothing for months when all my other roses were growing vigorously & blooming like crazy. I don't know what I did to break from its weird dormancy, but it might have been the banana smoothies I've been giving them lately ( I just blend up my old rotten bananas or banana peels with water, dilute that down pretty good & pour it around each rose) I started doing this when I read about roses love for potassium & I think it has really helped to encourage new growth & therefore bloom. I always hear people talk about Ebb Tide like it is such a reliable re-bloomer, and now hopefully I will experience that side of my Ebb Tide too. Jessica...See Morekstrong
