Help with cold stratifying?

I made a goofy mistake...

I have an envelope I've been keeping all my seeds in. I thought I had pulled out everything that needed to be ws'd, but as I was looking through them tonight, contemplating putting out annuals, I came across a packet I forgot.

Instructions say "for best results, cold stratify at 40 degrees for one month."

Well, my window to do this outside is gone, so looks like these will be going in the refrigerator.

My question is: Do I just stick the whole packet in the fridge? Do I have to plant them in little pots first, and stick those in the fridge?

Also, does it matter if I keep my fridge colder than 40?

Thanks! I realize this is a very basic, probably silly question, but I'm really new to growing from seed (obviously). :)
