unknown red and unknown bug

Hi! Can anyone out there help me identify this rose, and in the last picture the bug? I have seen this type of bug often over the years, but am not sure what it is.

The rose is a brilliant red, almost red cool-aid colored. Wonderful, strong old rose smell, somewhat sweet.

The rose reminds me of Crimson Bouquet. No idea about the bug, but what a looker!

I would say to coax some of these bugs onto a piece of paper and take pictures of them. I have never heard of any herbs like this or any other plants for that matter, dying in a few hours after looking great just hours earlier. The only time I have ever seen anything like that was a few hours after spraying Spectracide weed and grass control. I am talking about the non-selective weed control with diquat dibromide, and on certain weeds it will cause significant visible damage and discoloring within a few hours of its a hot day outside especially. Its possible they just dried out and began wilting.

Well that sure looks like it, considering how many beetles there are it seems somewhat remarkable that you were able to come up with one so similar (fine details of markings etc. separate one kind from another). Good that it is not a pest species, if it happens it was transported from one area to another.

They appear to resemble a type of scale but I am not familiar with a species that remains that flat or attaches to the plant in that manner. But there are scores of different species so not inclined to rule that out. I would suggest you take a sample of a branch or stem with these creatures attached into your county extension office for an accurate ID. They will also be able to tell you how to treat and when. If it is scale, timing is key!!

Not meant as a definite identification, but the saturation of your rose's color, with the almost "metallic" bluish reverse, reminds me quite a bit of Gypsy. Kim

I want the camera that could display such a red. I am afraid that it is far too expensive for me, but that rose is gorgeous.

Do you think it might be Dolly Parton?

Dolly is a good guess. I have one and it's the most gorgeous rose ever!! The blooms are huge and very fragrant. However, I think this rose is "Let Freedom Ring." The buds don't appear to be as large as Dolly, but they are exquisite. The only fault I have with LFR is I could not detect a strong scent as with Dolly.

thanks for everyone chiming in! I beginning to wonder if it is Dolly Parton. The color is just so brilliant, and the fragrance is just amazing. I'm going to do research more and see if that is what this rose is.

DP will have a yellow reverse I think. Look at juvenile Katydid photos and compare with yours. They eat rose buds, hate them!

I think the juvinile Katydid looks more grasshopper like. It appears in the picture that there is a rostum which is consistent with an assasin bug, which is a beneficial insect.

Not Crimson Bouquet, that's a darker, deeper red and the form is wrong. Not Dolly Parton, that's distinctly orange and does not have a yellow reverse (Rosie O'Donnell and Ronald Reagan do). Could be Gypsy but I thought of Let Freedom Ring when I first saw it. Maybe Veterans' Honor but mine doesn't have much fragrance.
