ID of this plant (near Cullman, AL)

Seems to be an evergreen, not sure what it is though. I don't remember it blooming, but it isn't in much sun. This is a small version of several that are around.

The leaves and the arrangement of the the leaves looks like a rhododendron. I have a co-worker with a cabin on Smith Lake. They have a large rhodie that was there when the bought the place and it does well.

With the purplish leaves, I'd suggest Horse Sugar, Symplocos tinctoria

have had miss dig here 3 times over the years ... they are very convert in their answers .... electric.. cable and phone all come in there.. they can tell me where within 6 inches becasue their gizmo isnt that precise ....... we are talking about a 4 foot wide bed ... and they will NOT commit to depth.. all 3 guys said depth-wise .... there is were it is supposed to be.. and where the gomer put it ... i am not messing with it ... i am lazy ... am extremely afraid of unrestrained electricity .... period.. this isnt king tuts tomb.. i am not going to do an archeology dig .... i figure the juniper .. will probably be there for a few decades ... and the thuja not far behind... i figure rotting wood will steal water and the decomposition process has the potential for stealing nitrogen ... so IF I REMEMBER.. i will throw down some fert once a year ... and luckily.. its on drip irrigation.. so the water should be all set ... any comments along those lines ..???? ken

This pot does have two fairly large holes in the bottom, as most bonsai pots do; so the pot is definitely able to drain as necessary. I do agree with you all though; the soil is inappropriate and keeping and I haven't like it since after the first week of putting the Fujian Tea in it. I just looked through the different bonsai soils I have. I do have a small amount of a tropical/sub-tropical mix leftover that is recommended for Fujian Teas. Do you think I should swap the current soil for this tropical mix now? There's not enough left in the bag to fill the pot (if I'm lucky, it might fill half the pot), so I would have to mix it with whatever potting soil my mom has leftover, which would probably end up being soil like what is currently being used. Though, I do have a bonsai mix that I bought for a couple Junipers I had. Maybe, instead of half tropical bonsai mix--half inappropriate potting soil, I could do a mix of half tropical bonsai mix--quarter conifer bonsai mix--quarter inappropriate potting soil. I kind of want to put some of that potting soil in the mixture to prevent the plant from becoming too dry. As Al mentioned, the Fujian Tea likes to stay at least a little wet; if I forget to check up or am unable to check up on it for a few days and it becomes too dry, I can basically just kiss it goodbye.

Need help with ID on 4x plants

floral_uk, The Aucuba hasn't received the attention/diligence that most of my others have. When I got these four, I potted them into Miracle Gro's moisture soil or something like that. I've had them inside/outside, and I wish I had known more about soil/watering habits at the time. When I repotted it, a significant amount of its roots were rotten. I cleaned some shears and tried to get every rotten root I could spot. It looked like it hadn't reached the crown, thankfully. So I think that's the cause, or at least a factor, in the blackening of the leaves and some other parts. I cut off all the blackened leaves and black branches, trying to be careful not to prune anything more as I'd just repotted it. I had it outside for a while at my old apartment, on a north-facing patio. It seemed to be doing decently there, though I think decent for this plant meant that there were no more problems showing up. I don't know that it's grown much at all with me. I'm not in an apartment with an east-facing patio, and it seemed like the sun was a bit harsh for it, though maybe that was just the root problem as well. Regarding light needs -- I've seen a ton of mixed opinions/stats on various websites, but it seems like a lot of them suggest partial sun or a shady area. Having just repotted it, is it best to leave it indoors at an east-facing window for a couple weeks to let it get adjusted to its new medium?

I thought it was a rhododendron as well, but can't seem to figure out which one. They seem to be evergreen, native as far as I know, and I haven't seen them bloom. There are some that are pretty large nearby.

In the same area are some native azaleas that are deciduous, the Alabama Azalea.

I did collect some seed from the alabama azaleas pretty late, but I haven't tried them yet. I have been sprouting sourwood, and in looking for instructions on that I found the ones for collecting native azalea seed and sprouting them. I'll try this week, should know my results in a couple of weeks.

Parents are RB and Peggy, live between Bham and Tuscaloosa.

Did you decide if this is Horse Sugar, Symplocos tinctoria? If so, the leaves should eventually fall off or be pushed off by new leaves in the spring (it is not evergreen, just tardy).

Sorry I didn't respond til now, I was going there this past weekend and wanted to make sure my response is right.

Leaves are still on and show no signs of turning more purple. I haven't identified it yet. Nothing in any of the pictures matches just right. Either the leaves don't match, or the bark on the larger ones don't match. maybe it isn't native, as I'm looking through native plant books/sites.

I'll keep an eye on it to see if it produces any flowers, I don't remember any last year though.

I do have another tree that I'll post pictures of when it does flower in the spring, I haven't been able to id it either.

Has anyone thought it might be a sweet bay tree? I had a couple of them growing beside my little bayou here in Mobile. They don't get very big, and they are evergreen.
I have pictures but cannot find all the CDs I put them on
when I changed computers. drats....
