One is Never Enough

So, being super bored today, I decided to take another look at my WS list--all the stuff supposedly "done" that is. Sudden panic! Why did I only sow one container each of six different kinds of lettuce? Have I lost my mind? This wouldn't feed a bird!

Mind you, I'm only feeding two people, but visions of standing in a food line waiting for fresh produce to be doled out did the trick. I whipped out six more containers, cut those tops off and sowed another batch of all those babies in about an hour.

One might imagine that I had a food-deprived childhood, but the real truth is that I have this cursed Italian mentality: you can never have enough food in the yard, the pantry, the freezer or on the plate.

I'm feeling much better now.

Is this a WSing condition? Has anyone else gone back and re-sowed another batch of something fearing you won't have enough?

I've sown three containers of Yvonne's salvia and several containers of petunias. All at different times.

I am the same with lettuce, among other things...
The bonus is the variety that you get in the salads...the minus is once the harvest starts, you've got to sow more to make sure you have it season long.
So get ready for "One is not enough" Part 2! :-)

bejay, since you have limited growing space, I'll tell you a trick my father taught me about growing cukes. He took 3 or 4 tall garden poles (not the thin bamboo sticks, actual 1 1/2" wooden poles) and built a sort of teepee with them, and nailed a few thin slats crosswise...you don't need many, because you want a few open spaces without leaf cover. Then he planted his pole beans around the outside of the teepee, and his cuke plants on the inside. The beans would hang down inside the teepee, making them pretty easy to pick (and they tended to grow long and straight instead of curling up) and the cukes benefited from being shielded from the worst of the summer heat, so he was able to grow juicy cukes all summer and into the fall instead of having the summer heat wizzle them up. 2 veggie crops in the space of one! I've only been canning for a few years, and started out with the easiest items, fruit jams and bread and butter pickles. They are still my most popular items amongst my friends and clients. Now I've gotten into marmalades, and that is a big hit with people who like marmalade. My husband and I like my pickle relish so much that I haven't bought a jar in a couple of years, and this past year I discovered the joys of pickled garlic. I still haven't come up with a batch of dill pickles that is as crispy as I like. I made a batch of full sours that turned out horribly salty, but after soaking in water for a couple of days, they're very tasty and crisp, but the ones I canned turned too soft. :( Next season I'm going to try half sours for my fridge and try a different recipe for the canned ones. Also, this year I have decided to invest in a pressure canner, as I would love to can tomatoes (I use a LOT of canned tomatoes in the winter), my soups (I'm a soup freak!),and the local corn when it's in season...I'd also like to can some green beans for my stepmother who doesn't can anymore, but who misses the green beans she used to put up. I am also resolving to can more peaches this year, as it's only January and I'm already sick to death of apples, pears, bananas and oranges...the only fruit in the market that's even worth bothering with. (As always, there are beautiful plums, mangoes, and nectarines, probably from South America, that are hideously expensive, and tasteless if you succumb to temptation) I didn't can any of the local peaches this past year, because it was so blasted hot when they came in that I couldn't face canning. But now I'm missing having them.

Try 'sifting' them. I've got a grate with about 1/4 inch holes and it lets the VC through and keeps most worms in. I just taped the small grate to the bottom of a small cardboard box and shake it. Those with large enterprises have big automatic systems- kind of cones that rotate, but it's the same principle. Also, since I started using a flow through, I haven't needed to sort worms from compost. Not everyone's flow through keeps 100% of the worms out of the bottom stuff, but I've been lucky. I also leave it in there until I need some, so it stays there for a long time. Even so, I'm still a member of disturber's anonymous.

I hit a lull between my perennials and Hardy annuals so I have been going back and doing seconds from some of the packs where I saved half for later. Now I'm almost past that and am waiting for more garden soil.

There are a few things that I'm eying, thinking I'll just go ahead and sow the rest of the pack ..... even if I did promise myself that I wasn't going to sow a lot this year. Sigh.

anewgarden - I sowed basil about a week ago. First time for me, so I don't know whether I did it too early or too late or what. We'll see.

I did do some basil a while ago, as an experiment, I wasn't going to tell anyone. I will keep doing more, bit by bit.. and then I think I'll put a lot out in mid April. If sowing basil early works, I will be very happy!

anewgarden, I cheated. My basil was started indoors. I'll be moving it outside next week when the temperatures return to the mid 60s+.

I do have some purple ruffles basil left.... hmmm. Oh, wait. I need more dirt.

mlcom, I use mostly cut and come again lettuces so there's no need for successive sowing. I just snip the outer leaves off all summer.

Prof, I'm using a psueudo square foot plan for my veggie garden this year. I have planned for 20 squares of spinach, 28 squares of lettuce and 8 squares of mustard. Yes, one is never enough! I didn't grow up hungry and I'm not Italian, but I come from Southern family where food equates to hospitality. When my favorite brand of tomatoes were on sale for $.25 a can, I bought 57 cases of 12. Did I mention we eat a largely Mediterranean diet? Spinach, tomatoes...if only I could grow my own olive oil.

This is cursed Italian mentality? Hmmmm, I would have guessed Croatian going by my now deceased FIL who kept three freezers, usually full, long after his 10 children were grown and had homes of their own.

My sisters larder could stock a food bank, courtesy her impulse shopping German husband - gotta get that Costco card away from that guy :)

I can lean the same way myself with a very mixed background ...I cook corned beef possibly three times a year but put 6 in the freezer yesterday from Safeways sale. Who can resist $1.39/lb meat these days.

Keep sowing that lettuce, if you can't use it surely a neighbor can :)

Morz: Guess it goes to show we're all more alike than we think. We've heard from the Italian contingent, the Southerners, and now the Croates. You bet there's a zillion more! Hahaha.

I (sheepishly) have to admit I have three freezers, too: One in my kitchen fridge, another in a second basement fridge, and a separate upright freezer I bought used 15 years ago. Don't you know these three are packed? Of course, when the grown kids come over and "raid" Dad's larder for a pork roast or a few bags of home-grown veggies, I'm thankful for the extra space.

Ellen put up a post about the Universal Language of Plants, that also holds true for food. They both feed the soul and warm hearts.

With my Bohemian/Czech grandmother, the first thing she did after hugging and kissing you, is ask if you want something to eat. She too, had a big upright freezer filled with home-made soups and stews. Grandpa always made sure it was well stocked with Eskimo Pies for us. We almost always left with something... a jar of her soup, some fresh baked cookies...
