May I second bakemom's suggestion that you update your gardenweb zone info to also include a location? (Mine says 7 OK) That way we'll know a little more about your gardening climate.

I'm right on the border of Zone 7 on the WV/VA/DC area of the Blue Ridge.

Are the temperatures really going to go up that high?

I'm expecting 50-60 for the next 7 days, and rain.

I have about 40 containers WS'd and do a few more every day as the milk jugs become available.

I started with perennials and wildflowers, have already started my Spring greens and flowers like violas, snapdragons, Chinese-forget-me-nots, lettuces and other greens. I haven't started annuals yet, but I am timing them to be ready to go in the ground around May 1.

First I have to get rid of a groundhog! She has probably been cleaning me out of spring potatoes, pansies, and my Chinese greens.

I ordered a trap today. Have never done this before. I am new to the country, groundhogs, AND to WS!

Did you know that groundhogs are related to squirrels?

I am in Zone 7 as well. My jugs are showing signs of life. If I can just keep them alive to plant out. I am still unsure about planting out and when to start increasing ventilation holes as we still have cold spells. I got burned very badly last year and do not want a repeat.

I'm here- I'm in that 6/7 area too, outside of DC. It's gonna get warm here this week, although not quite that warm. One day in the 60s. I've got green sprouts everywhere, but I've got squirrels digging in my containers! ARGH.

Ok...I'm hoping this will show more zone information! LOl I'm in the Memphis, TN area.

I've been kinda following what the zone 6 people were doing and assuming I could do the same with a little bit leeway.

Siss...last year was brutal, man! That late frost we had. (shakes head)

Tomorrow's temp here will be 70-72 and 75 Thursday with thunderstorms. Our 10 day forecast (which could change) has the lowest high at 57. So...we are looking at 57-72 temps for the next several days. Lows in the high 30's-low 50's at night.

I expect things to start popping soon and I've been clearing weeds from my flower beds like crazy.

I'm with Alberta on the Island (except an hour east). We haven't seen that "warming trend" yet but we are waiting! I've got my very first seedlings this week - two containers of tiny tiny poppy sprouts. In your jugs Alberta! (Alberta gave me just bags and bags of water jugs) Nothing else is doing much yet - but I am confident that they will!

3orangeboys, are you MD or DC? I'm in Harpers Ferry. It should be a cool week, 65 degrees and less here. Soon the hills wil be silver lavender with wisteria gone wild in this part of the mountains.

I am in either zone 6 or 7 depending on whether you go by zip code or temperature (and which web site you consult). I'm in northeast TN about an hour north of Knoxville.

I started wsing in late Feb., and so far my only sprouts are lettuce.

I'm in zone 7 west of fort worth, texas. We're supposed to hit 90 by the end of this week. Almost everything I have has sprouted (with the exception of what I've done the last week or so). Most are still small, but sprouted nonetheless. I'm waiting to plant out as we are not passed our official last freeze date. Keeping these guys from cooking is turning into a full time job (it still gets fairly cold at night, so I can't completely remove covers, and we had snow about 4 or 5 days ago)

I'm in 7b, Newport News, VA. I have, oh, at least 300 containers done and haven't started the annuals. I have lots of sprouts but no where near all the containers are sprouting yet. It is in the 50s today. We had temps in the upper 20s on Sunday and high winds on Saturday. I have a few containers open, but most are still covered. I hope it doesn't get too hot over the weekend, as we are going out of town.

I'm in zone 7 also. I live in the piedmont area of NC. I've had some sprouts since February. I've had some cleome, four 0 clocks & seedbox that I think some cold temps killed. Everything else looks great. I'm hoping there are still unsprouted seeds in those 3 containers that might sprout later.

My only disaster so far is a milk jug of rosemary seeds got knocked over by a dog. I will try to put it right later.

I'm in Zone 7, foothills of NC. Lots of sprouts here. The up-and-down weather this year is making me a little crazy. I remember last year's late freeze all too well. . .Will wait a good while before planting out this time.

Zone 7b, sometimes 8a, depending on the site. 45 mintutes southwest of Birmingham, Alabama. Have a few containers of small sprouts, many more to go. They will probably show up this week,as we are supposed to be in the 70s all week :-)

Rosebush I know exactly what you mean. I did not wintersow last year, but had set some greenhouse plants out that died. I also lost some plants that were already established. I am thinking late april or may I may just move some of the jug plants to a cold frame and harden them off there. I do not want a repeat of last year. I am up very close to Mount Airy about 20 minutes from Virginia. It has been crazy with temps here too. Today 65 Sunday it was 40 with two nights of temps in the middle twenties. Good luck with your plants. I have gotten germination in lots of mine so far, the growth and amount per jug seems to be the biggest difference for me so far. I am really enjoying it though. I go check them every day. I also have some in the greenhouse and cold frame, but so far. I really like the looks of the wintersown ones. They aren't leggy and are pretty much carefree except for watering. Has anyone started increasing the ventilation holes for hardening off yet. When would be the best time to start this. I am using Milk jugs with only the caps off so far.

ThreeOrangeboys: Do you get a chance to see the gardens at the Smithsonian castle and the Botanical Garden on the Mall? Those are two I try to get down to see every year.

DH is working in the Natural History building this week (engineer).

I saw my first butterfly today! It was a black one and thrilled me no end.

ThreeOrangeBoys: The roses around the castle usually bloom around the end of May and all around the castle are sweet gardens. Down by the Capitol, the Botanical Garden always has some pretty gardens inside--the pool in the middle is my favorite.

I have 3 cats too! I never had cats before and became their mother two years ago, and now am a bonafide cat lover. Someday looking forward to raising a kitten.

I had to fence my 3 out of the vegetables--you know why!

But straight out back there are plans to build a two-tiered pond for them. We just have baby pools there now and it is so cute watching them stand on the rims to "fish". They are super efficient at keeping the mole and mouse population down too.

Do you have any good tips for places to visit/or eat in DC or in Arlington? Pizza places, exhibits ... that kind of thing.

I still haven't gotten over 9-11 and was in Sterling that morning--ground zero for you. Were you in Arlington that morning? I don't think it's so easy to forget when you live as close to ground zero as we do!

One more here, outside of DC. Have about 220 containers with some more to come depending on how fast I can get them planted. My kids keep wanting things like dinner and help with homework - far less important than planting my containers LOL!

Nothing like raising a kitten. My little one was a stray at six weeks and I took her in as the shelter would have put her down. I gave her the food and medicine the vet recommended and prescribed and now she is a little piggy. She is small, but chunky. I am the only one who can pick her up.

When you raise one, you will be rewarded.
