Congrats siichan!! Don't forget to do the happy sprout dance!! Yippee--you're zone 6 so maybe my first sprouts aren't far off. I keep checking those containers but so far nada. It's a leap of faith however so I just need to believe what everyone on this forum tells me--the green wave WILL spread across the country.

Gardenweed, I believe you will have your sprouts soon too! Even my sprouts are still spotty. The weather this week should be in the high 40s, so I hope you'll see some sprouts soon!!

siichan - thanks! It was 55 here today with the most gorgeous, warm sunshine and a lovely breeze. The forecast calls for more of the same the next 4 or 5 days so my guess is there will be sprouts in some of my containers very soon.
I have a mix of gallon and half-gallon milk jugs, some of which contain lupine and iberis/candytuft seeds. Which type of containers did you WS that have sprouted? Are your containers getting a lot of sun? I put mine in as much shade as possible to protect them from the harsh sun when the seedlings are too tiny to survive it.
Did you do the happy sprout dance? Lots of folks will appreciate it if you post sprout photos. We all need to see green growing things this time of year!!

Congrats!! It is soooo exciting for a newbie to get sprouts for the first time. Wanna know something else? It is soooo exciting for a 2nd year wintersower, and third year etc. The fun and amazement of it all just never seems to end! Next will be the excitement of the first bloom, and then excitement over collecting seed which leads to trading, which leads to sorting seeds, which then leads to sowing more seeds. You are now in a vicious cycle that you will not want to get out of!

gardenweed, I sowed mine in little blueberry containers. Some of my sprouts are even in a 4" pot that I cover with saran wrap. I try to put them in sun to get more warmth for the seeds. I think I shouldn't worry of frying them off in this kind of weather. I could be wrong though. But again, I got a lot of vents on the blueberry container.

Congratulations! I sowed Asters for the first time this year and will be looking for early germination. :O) Thanks for the heads-up!

That's exciting! I collected aster seeds, but that plant is going to be a nuisance, huge woody thing in just one year. I thought lupine might be hard to WS, sowed 2 kinds so your news is encouraging.

I don't remember my first sprouts the first time. Seems like it was all at once, poppies, alyssum, rudbeckia and crazy daisies, think I lost the others or can't remember.

Thanks everyone! I wish I sowed more lupines :( I think I only sowed like 5 seeds. I am still waiting for poppies and alyssum to come up.

Oh, and I didn't know that asters got huge. Like tiffy, this is also my first time trying aster. Do you have pics, aliska? How did they do?

WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!

The first time I winter sowed I did not get much. Maybe two containers germinated. But that did not stop me because I have always had the green thumbs with seeds. So I perfected method, container size and type, and soil and now I don't sweat what doesn't germinate and count myself successful with those that do.
