Sowing Annual Seeds - When?

Hey all,

I have a lot of annual seeds. Some of them I might direct-sow, but I was thinking I'd do some of them with the WS method. In Zone 7, would now be a good time? Or next weekend?]

I have just had Rudbeckia for about a month now. Today when I checked, looked like I also had a hollyhock!

I am not in your zone, but I believe you can sow annuals in zone 7 now. I have been sowing my hardy annuals in zone 5, and I have sowed some more "annual/annuals" if that makes sense, such as snap dragons. :)

connietn - you're probably safe to WS tender annuals now in zone 7 but if you're not sure, it couldn't hurt to wait another two weeks. Best bet is to check the Wintersown.org website. There are approximate dates for WS perennials, hardy annuals, half-hardy annuals and tender annuals/vegetables by zone. Just do a search on Zone 7 and you should see the link that will tell you when to WS your annuals.
Using the information posted for Zone 6, I made a chart for myself that gives the WS date + sprout date of many of the seeds I'm WS this year to use for comparison with my "actual" sprout dates...when/if they sprout! I'm a newbie still waiting for the green wave to roll through and leave hundreds of sprouts in its wake!
Good luck and don't forget to post photos when you have them--we're all waiting with baited breath for those sprout pictures!!!

Well for a more courteous answer, LOL. Here in zone 7 my little neighbor that has beautiful poppies each and every year says to direct sow them in February. So for you in zone 9 I would say if you are wanting the blooms in the spring you could probably direct sow yours in January or still even in February. Also how she recommends direct sowing them is by tossing them on the ground where ever you are wanting them then lightly press. Now I will also mention her area is amended so she isn't just tossing them on bare dirt. If you were to go by the guidelines stated above it would make no sense, each plant has various germination rates. Various time from germination to bloom. Not all plants are the same.

Dracopsis Amplexicaulis - clasping coneflower I kinda thought they'd be okay now. Are you talking about Rudbeckia hirta Gloriosa Daisy which is a hardy annual, bi and P depending on location? I am in zone 5a, and I usually start my tender annuals in mid-April. They sprout so quickly! I throw a row cover or blanket over the containers if temps dip into the low 30s/upper 20s. Also, I ring my sprouted tender annual containers with my perennial/hardy annual containers to create a little bit of extra insulation from cold nights. At ellenr--I believe if you go to weather.com, there is a feature to look at historical weather data. If you plug in your zip code then scroll down a bit, there is a heading on the right titled "Today's Averages and Records." Just a little beneath that heading is a link titled "Historical Data." Click that link, and you can look at average, daily temps for your area. This might help! cheers, Norabelle

Thanks for the reply shinyalloy. We're in a microclimate close to Spolane Wa.Z5. I think I've gone a little overboard on buying seeds since I read about Ws.but here goes. Here's what I have-alyssum,african daisy,ambosia-for green,baby's breath,bells of ireland-again for green,marguerite carnations.1st yr. blooming delphinium,foxy foxglove,gaillardia,godetia,lobelia,morning glory,peony poppy.petunia wave,snapdragons,sweet peas,verbascum southern charm and zinnia. If you're wondering, I have a large area to cover in sun and part sun and some of this will be for large floral arrangement. And the most important- I'll have a lot of help planting.

I always start them March 15th or so. Looks like I will be able to start them this weekend this year! I got some soil filled and moistened in containers today in hopes of getting some seeded tomorrow!!!
