If anyone remembers, I asked about a thorny climber last Feb. I bought 10 years earlier as Mme Alfred Carriere (nursery in Maine now defunct) which didn't seem to match the description points for MAC. This puzzled me - very frustrating!

Recently I picked some of its late-season blooms: pale pink, 3" diam. at most, very double and quartered but flat as they open fully, pale pink. I put them in a water glass on the computer table in order to study them closely while I searched online for a match. So NOW I can see what I couldn't before: this climber is most likely cl. Souvenir de la Malmaison. It has thorns on the big (12') canes, grows in small clusters, has glossy green leaves, and so forth. Not much scent, though. But still - I'm delighted to put a name to it. And evidently to possess a Bourbon.

I don't know why I value it more now that I've identified it, but somehow "mystery rose" or "not MAC" as names didn't do it for me. I'm happier with a label.
