Do you treat your Daffodils as perennials?

I was at Bennett Nurseries in Huntsville the other day and asked the guy about Daffodils. I explained that I was thinking of putting them in a raised area that will surround a maple tree. He stated that in this area you do not treat daffodils as perennials, but you dig up, toss, and replant new bulbs every year. I was a bit confused, because I am fairly sure that several of my neighbors have daffodils that just seem to be on auto-pilot. Of course I could be wrong, I may have just missed them replanting every year for the last 5, but I don't think so.

How do you all treat your daffodils?

If you replant each year, do of you think you do better that way?

For those whose daffodils are perennials (or at least are treated so), do they bloom each (or at least most) years? Do they spread much year to year? Do you have to occasionally thin the bulbs?

Thanks,

Steve
