Freaking out about my rose

Hi everyone,

This is a photograph of a Pappa Meilland rose that I ordered from Roses Unlimited in the spring. I don't know if it's all the talk about Rose Rosette Virus that has me being paranoid or if I have a legitimate concern. This plant seems to have unusual thorny growth on it that looks very odd. I don't think that the leaves are deformed in any way, but the thorns just don't look right.

Also, there is one particular cane on the plant that shot up way taller than the rest of the plant and I also thought that was kind of odd too.. You all be the judge:(

I had posted pictures of my Paw Maw plant a few weeks ago. It had similar looking new growth and it freaked me out too! After I gave it a week or so to mature, the thorns seemed to shrink and look more like the rest of my plant. Hopefully, yours will do the same :)

Are the thorns hard or soft? From my understanding the hyper-thorniness of RRD never hardens off and stays soft and flexible. Also is the new growth very red and the leaves contorted at all? Some roses are just really thorny naturally (Have a look at Snowfire and Falling in Love!) and from those pics that plant looks OK to me.

I really like the LR color and the flow of colors you have throughout your house. Maybe it's because my LR and DR are the similar to your LR. My lighting is similar to yours. I have eggplant, teal, and orange incorporated with my accessories such as pillows and art for which that color works perfectly. Not every neutral color works well in that type of lighting, It took a whole lot of samples some of which are highly used and mentioned on GW to get it right for our rooms including many of the grays. When my neighbors and friends come into our home, the first thing they compliment is our wall colors. They want to know what we used. You'll see when it's all said and done. You will have the same reaction. I think your color consultant did a great job for you. Have fun decorating. My only suggestion is that you keep all your furnishings neutral with fabrics that have textures and have fun bringing in all the colors with your accessories and art. You have a beautiful home.

If I knew it would be coming next week, I probably would. But it's "maybe" it'll show up at Eurostoves next Friday, or *maybe* it'll show up the Friday after that. Of course I've never had granite so maybe I just don't know how bad it will be ;-) And while I won't be able to cook, I will be able to move the mountain of packed kitchen stuff out of my other rooms. And I need to do that in order to finish gutting the old kitchen and (more importantly) finish running the heat mats and tile from the new kitchen across the rest of the space. And then backsplash tile, plumbing, etc. We have weeks worth of work lined up that are dependent on the granite being in.

Post a photo of the copy of the approved plan they were supposed to build to. Does it show deeper sides with the adjacent counters butting into them? Enough room for 24.375 plus the 2 inches behind so that the sides of the refrigerator BOX can be installed flush with the front of the cabinetry? Normally a cabinet shop would make this allowance or at least go over the options and differences. But if someone else did the design and it was adhered to, you don't have much to stand on. Also, is the opening the correct height because the hinges not fitting into the opening (like the photo above) can keep it from going back as well? Did you by chance consider another refrigerator that would fit properly? That might be the easiest and most economical way to address the issue. Switch them up and sell the first one. And to the guy that commented about "custom shops" ordering components, this is a common practice throughout the industry. It's very rare to find a cabinet shop that builds every part of a cabinet anymore and as long as what is ordered is of acceptable quality and fits, what's the problem?

Fortunately, I don't have to deal with RRD, but the new growth on your Papa Meilland doesn't look weird to me. Very often, a young, immature plant can push out extra vigorous new basals like that and they can very often be extremely prickly like that. To me, it indicates the plant finally has some roots under it and is putting out the type of growth to indicate it is maturing. The foliage doesn't appear unhealthy, either. I'd say, for being a Papa Meilland, it's a dang fine looking plant. That variety is not known for being the healthiest, but yours looks quite clean and vigorous. Kim

Thank you so much for the fast responses. I feel alot better now because I was in a panic and ready to go out there with a hedge clipper and a shovel...lol..

You know, when I used to grow orchids, I remember that there were labs that you could send cuttings to, and they would perform an ELISA test. It was for Cymbidium Mosaic Virus and Tobacco Mosaic Virus. Does such a thing exist for roses??

My papa was from Palatine. I went out and looked it over. The last really vigorous cane has closely spaced thorns like yours. The smaller weaker canes don't. Looks like you found a good spot for papa. My advice is let him grow and don't cut long stems so he can make some more good sized canes.

I don't think a test exists for RRD yet, at least not for home growers, but I may be behind. The best one to diagnose it, imho, is Ann right here on this forum.

I just had the same sort of cane pop up on 2 roses who haven't done that yet, too. It startled me! They look normal now, two weeks later. They just finally poked high into enough sun in my case, I think :) And/or their roots are terribly happy. Yay!
