You know it also depends on when your mom cut those limbs. If she cut them in late winter, then they are probably dead limbs with nothing to give. If, however, she cut them early fall, before they had a chance to die, and over-wintered them either in water or soil, then they should be fine.

One way to check is to scratch into the bark. If there is green underneath, it should have sprouting ability. Another way to check is to look at the heart of the limb. Cut a few inches off the limb, if you see a greenish looking core the plant should sprout. You should easily be able to tell if it is dead. .......Good Luck!!! Janet

Now I have to wonder, Did you actually BURRY Them in the ground or did you leave a lot of stem above ground. I would think you should not burry the entire thing, but then again there are many Southern ways of growing things that I am still learning.

It also might still be a little cool for these to root and sprout. A couple of my Brugs have resprouted, and my Confederate Roses have as well... but they aren't growing very vigorously yet. I would imagine starting them from stem cuttings would take even a little longer, and they may not sprout until it warms up a little more.

as soon as you forget about them, they will probably sprout. thats what my plants like to do to me.

I don't know about Angel trumpet but I do know that one summer a favorite aunt brought me a cutting from a Confederate Rose. She just dug a little trench in my flower bed laid the limb down and covered it up. She said that you plante this just like you planted sugar cane. I guess she was right because for years I had beaufitul Confederate Roses blooming.

Yes Mimidi that's how I planted these. Dug a shallow trench and buried them. I guess I'll wait a while longer and maybe~like gilisi said~if I just forget about them they'll sprout. But that's easier said than done, I check on them almost every day!!! Patience is not one of my strong characteristics.

Nor mine. Right now I have totally lost patience with this wind we are having. The cold, rain, and wind last week and now a whole week of wind again. My flowers, tomatoes, and peppers look terrible.

Just give the stalk a little time. I have been upset because so much of my stuff is still doing nothing but I keep reminding myself that it is still April and I need to give everything a few more weeks. They need that steady heat of the days and nights. I sure hope the cold is gone for awhile.

I like to use cuttings of confederate rose about two feet long and dig a hile about one and one-half feet deep and plant three unrooted cuttings in it. That leaves about 6 inches above ground. The extra depth means you won't have to worry about the cuttings drying out. This works for fig trees as well.

Ah, now I know how to start a fig tree. When do you do this?

Spring is the best time to stick cutting like this. I think as long as the plant had time to root well before winter, you would be successful though.

All I do with Conf. Rose is in late fall when I cut it back, I cut pieces about 18"-24" long, stick them down in a gallon jar of water and leave until spring. I check occasionally to make sure there is plenty of water in jar. I rooted about 15 -20 pieces this winter - have given some away and planted a couple myself - still have some left.

My sister-in-law does what Amelia does but I had to do it the way eken does it. I hope all of those who grow this have large acreage. Mine got bigger than an old oak tree in my garden in two years.

I received several cutting of both angel trumpet and confederate rose several months ago. I rooted them both in a bucket of water inside the house over the winter and both have done well. There is no doubt the Angel trumpet had more roots. All cuttings of angel trumpet rooted while only about half of the conferate rose. I've planted them upright with about half of the cutting about ground and half below, which is how there were in the water. Hope it will work....I assumed this was the correct way....they seem to be tolerating it....
