I' m ecstatic -have found more room for roses, please help choose

Looking up at my house from the bottom of the driveway (at least 30 feet up) today, I realized how plain the house looks from there. All you can really see is weathered redwood fencing around the whole side of the house, with the deck and pergola/loggia hidden behind trees. Outside the fence there is a dirt ledge about 3-5 feet wide before the ground drops steeply, stretching at least 100 feet. How would that look with a half dozen fat, chunky, sun-loving, drought-resistant tea roses? Right now it is decorated with half-dead ground cover. My colors closer to the house are lavender, pink, purple and white with yellow and gold accents. For the area outside the fence I thought a different color scheme of warm-colored teas might be beautiful. I'm thinking Clementina Carbonieri, Monsieur Tillier, General Gallieni, Rosetty Delizy, etc. I would prefer the teas to be more spreading than tall so as not to obscure the mountain and valley vistas. I'm really excited at this unexpected project (never mind that my lavender rose project hasn't even been started!), and fortunately my husband is a completely willing and uncomplaining hole digger and planter. I'd probably need about five to six LARGE, spectacular teas. Jeri, I'm counting on you, among others.

Sounds like a great project to me---and how nice that hubby is a willing digger.

Lots of dirt and lots of sun---sounds like a great combination to me---

Teas don't do to well here in my garden but I've seen pictures of the ones you mentioned and I think it will be lovely.

Sounds really exciting !!!!

Well, I don't live in your area, but Rosette Delizy and General Gallieni are not huge roses here. I've heard rumors that Rosette Delizy can get very large in your area if left to her own devices. Mons. Tillier and Clementina are sprawly things here. I keep the height and width of Clementina and Mons Tillier pruned back somewhat and they don't seem to mind. My Rosette Delizy has never gotten large enough to need much pruning. RD is very healthy here, just not very large. I have all of these Teas and love them. Hoovb is growing Clementina and I think Luanne may have all of these in her garden in California.

You're right, Sue. I found distribution maps of both californica and nutkana. Rosa californica isn't mapped any further north than Oregon, but nutkana is in most of the western states. They sure look alike to my eyes, though. thanks for the help, Sue.

The fourth unidentified one -- the small red with about 10 petals appears to be Dr. Huey, which is a rootstock sucker, and should be gotten rid of. Yank it out (don't cut it off, that only encourages it). If it is attached to or near a different rose that is still growing, and if you continue to let it grow, it will eventually kill the other rose by stealing all the energy away from the plant grafted to those roots. If there's nothing living in that general vicinity, I would still get rid of it -- it's a disease prone once-a-year bloomer that is not worth the effort to care for it. As for the others, the red and the pink could be anything -- there are too many red and pink roses out there to even make an educated guess. Dig around some more and see if you can find more tags -- happens all the time that they are somewhere in the dirt nearby. For wild a__ guesses at the others, how about Rio Samba for the yellow-orange and Bride's Dream for the very light pink? Kathy p.s. Oh all right -- I'll take a stab at the other two also -- how's about Mr. Lincoln for the red (intoxicating scent -- is it there?), and Miss All American Beauty for the first of the two pinks. But that last pink bud's gonna hafta open before we can even guess at that one.

Are you completely redoing his room or just updating the bedding and paint? It sounds like the plan would be to not only feature two different color schemes, but both football and baseball. What types of items from the two sports teams would he like to include--posters, equipment, etc? Of the colors you listed, what colors does he actually prefer? Let that be your guide in determining whether to emphasize more the navy, grey or orange. My experience has been it is difficult to maintain a cohesive color scheme for my older two children (13 and 15) as once the walls are painted and the bedding there, they will just pin up whatever they collect that appeals to them. For instance DD went to a pro soccer game recently and was give a free gift of this huge banner (all in black/white/blue). She promptly pinned it over her bed--with the orange walls. Doesn't work for me so I dare not show pics of her room, but it works for her. If you are adding any furniture I'd suggest black-IKEA--as it works well with teens as well so you will not need to totally start over again in 4-5 years.

Regarding the rug, the color is great but a touch too traditional in design. No matter what you choose, you‘ll be tied to It. If it has more colors, you can go bold or use more subdued shades when you tire of a look.

Ingrid, I think if left to their own devices, Rosette Delizy and Mons Tilier will have some spread, but they can also achieve some height. To keep them down, you will have to do some careful pruning.
But do let them become well established before doing much pruning.
I find that Rosette Delizy has a more naturally upright habit than does Mons. Tillier.
