Don, is this plant inside the house? It appears to be suffering from insufficient light combined with too dry air. Roses, even minis, are NOT house plants. They will not flourish inside a building. Light from a window is too hot, too dry and insufficient to keep them alive and healthy. How have you held this plant since you obtained it? Where; how close to hot walls; what kind of sun exposure; etc.? There are many possibilities for what you're experiencing, but from the looks of it, you've kept it inside. Kim

Thanks for the response Kim. Its kept in my patio. It gets around 3-4 hrs of direct sunlight everyday.

Not enough sun.

6 plus hours a day is the least amount of sun necessary for most roses. Also, it could not stay in that pot very long, it would be too small pretty quickly.

4 hours is not enough sun normally, but the past six weeks have been brutally hot, so 4 hours may have been okay considering the wretched summer heat we've been enduring, and that this is a small potted rose.

A potted rose from HD can vary in quality a lot--at this time of year they are the leftovers that didn't sell last spring. So possibly not the healthiest rose. Could have dried out, gotten scorched by the nasty heat we've had, over watered, underwatered... How often were you watering and when? Did you fertilize it (not recommended in super hot weather)?

Thanks everyone for the responses. I normally water once in 5-6 days and around 5-6 PM PST. Also, the pot is the self-watering one, it has a receptacle at the bottom to hold excess water.

Text conversation is often lacking in info, despite current trends ;-) so pardon if I'm stating the obvious...

When you say 'self-watering' pot, do you mean it simply has a saucer (I can't tell from the photo)? If so, it won't 'self-water' unless there is a wick to draw the water up into the soil. Most folks around here don't believe in saucers, all too often the water doesn't drain out of the pot well enough and if it doesn't dry out between waterings, its, well, icky.

As for your schedule, you don't say, so again pardon, but do you every check the soil first, or just water on a schedule? You can check the soil with a well placed digit or even lift the pot up.

Usually, if the pot is too soggy, the leaves will yellow and wilt, the stems will also wilt. If stems start turning black, it's time to change the soil as it has spoiled - too much water will fill up the air pockets, creating a great environment for anaerobic bacteria that, frankly, stink. Roots need air.

If the leaves are brown/crispy and falling off and/or the stems start to shrivel, it is not getting enough water.

I agree with the above, that four hours direct sun in a reflective patio is probably plenty right now, it has been unusually hot for us.

Roseseek has also schooled me on what should be obvious, but really wasn't to me. Plastic and ceramic pots will retain heat from direct sun. Black pots are the worst. Put them on cement and you might as well put your pot on the stove in some weather!!! Basically, those conditions cook the roots. Your pot won't absorb as much heat as black - try holding the pot when the sun has been on it in the heat of the day to check your conditions. Also, if the plant is not root bound, the roots will have a small area of insulation to protect them, if it's root bound, the roots will suffer the heat of the pot.

All plant basics, but some times what's common sense to the plant isn't to us ;-)

I normally do not check soil before watering. I just water it as per my schedule and the pot has no saucer, these are the self watering pots sold at home depot, where we water it from bottom.

I agree that you need to see if the soil is moist, wet or drying out. I have used self watering pots for roses before but not young roses without many roots. Soils that are wet and hot can kill roots. Personally, I would get another pot and saucer and check the roots for signs of rot. Replant in fresh soil if you think the soil is too soggy. Are you using potting mix? Soil from the ground in a self watering pot doesn't work well at all. Neither does peat moss based soils- too soggy. It's tough to water on a schedule until you figure out when the plant is needing the water. My impatiens in self watering pots can drink the water all up in two days but my little strawberry rootings can last about 4 or 5 days. In general, the plants that can live in constantly moist soil or the ones that are large and will use all the water in 2 days do the best in self watering pots. Roses don't like to be constantly wet. On the other hand, if they are drying out due to weather and sun hitting the pot, they won't like that. What you want to aim for is a plant that is using the water up and not going completely dry before the next time you water. Check out the roots. If the roots are still ok and not rotting, you have a good chance to turn this rose around.

I think the rose didn't get enough water and is probably dying. My self-watering pots really only keep the bottom half of the pot moist, and the top dry. For established plants, that's no big deal because their roots have grown throughout the pot. For brand new plants, all of the roots are at the very top (and center!).

You must water from the top directly onto the young rootball. Baby plants use up all of the water in their rootball very quickly, and need to be checked often, especially in Summer. They will not necessarily soak up water from the new soil surrounding them. Sometimes the new soil acts like a sponge, drawing more water out. I don't know if this plant will recover, but if not I hope you'll give roses another try because they are definitely worth it.

You HAVE to water when the soil gets dry, not to a schedule. Also from the look that rose probably does not have long enough roots to go down properly to the main part of the water 'table' (for want of a better phrase), unless you have wicked the soil from the 'self watering' section

I would water from on top and most probably at this point toss that soil and try new soil as well.

As well as that I would be pruning it now to give it a better chance after repotting. I would take that stem on the left (top RHS photo) off completely and 1/2 the height of the other 2.... I am assuming you are not potting this outside ever but keeping it in a pot on the balcony.

And Don, whatever you do, don't be discouraged. Roses are easy to grow in our area if we just buy varieties that are resistant to mildew & rust (what the big boxes carry aren't necessarily). BUT, no matter what one might think, considering there are so many pots in garden centers, pots aren't easy to keep plants long term as they are less forgiving of adverse conditions than plain old dirt.

I hope you get to the 'root' of your problem! ;-)
