Anyone growing Viru tea 'Garnet Crest?'

I'm still trying to find info about this newer tea--growth habit, bloom frequency, mature size, etc. I just bought it on impulse. Can anyone help?

Thanks for getting our 'Garnet Crest". While the flower form is like a traditional Tea, it will grow much more compact. For us, in India, it grows only to a height of about 2 1/2- 3 feet. It is vigorous and blessedly disease resistant. We have had exceptionally and unusual heavy rains from August onwards, and G.C. has not one leaf blackspotted. It is continuous flowering, and floriferous.
Hope you will like it. In coolish weather, the delicate markings are more prominent.

Again, ELISA, when properly done, is 100% effective, and has never once, in the 30-ish years we've used it, failed to give an accurate analysis. This is considering the following: 1. We always enclose "blind" samples of known infected and known uninfected tissue -- blind to the lab -- and unless the results come back with them correctly identifying all of those, we would not believe their results on our unknowns. That assures that virus titer is in a usable range on the day the test was done. In actual fact, in all those years, they (WSU Prosser's ELISA lab) have NEVER gotten one wrong, even once. Pretty good record. 2. Once that's done and a rose is "certified" clean (notice that ELISA is just one of the tripod of tests we run -- they're also tested with 'Mme. Butterfly' and 'Shirofugen' cherry -- all 3 must come out unambiguously clean) -- no rose once certified in that way has EVER later been found to have rose mosaic. Not one. Not ever. Not even in cold climates where all the intelligent people live. On rare occasions, the lab has said a test was somewhat ambiguous, and in those cases, we ignored all of the results from that run, and re-ran them later. 3. While we use the three tests for redundancy, we've never seen a case in which one test came out positive while the others came out negative -- in 100% of the roses I've ever tested, all three methods have agreed on their result. So obviously, the point of this long, drawn-out discussion with all kinds of complaints, is moot -- there is no problem here. We have no problem at all identifying where the disease is. No evidence to the contrary has been presented here. I would like to say that you can't argue with absolute 100% success, but obviously, there is one person who is determined to argue continuously with absolute 100% success! So yes, I'm just working our way toward the 150 posts mark, and hoping to keep us focused on the real issues, rather than being constantly drawn into perfectly silly little side arguments that are in and of themselves without merit.

gardenatlanta, I have these three: Enchantress (or Enchanter) Blooms: small, magenta; they seemed to ball a lot the first year Foliage: exceptionally well foliated - very bushy, typical tea leaves but on the small side, very pretty Thorns: haven't noticed, can't see the canes for the leaves Bloom frequency: last summer (it's first) it seemed almost constantly in bloom Fragrance: don't know, too low to the ground Disease resistance: excellent SIZE: rather small - one year old and about 2' tall and 3-1/2' wide but very healthy General Schablikine Almost a year in the ground here Blooms: kind of irregularly shaped, kind of untypical but I like them, shades of brick red & pink Foliage: well foliated, fairly tall but twiggy not vase-shaped but mine's a year & a half old so has some maturing to do, leaves can get this alligator rippled pattern in them, not on all leaves Thorns: typical for a tea, not huge, not a lot Bloom frequency: blooms in cycles probably 6 weeks apart approximately Fragrance: probably light tea Disease resistance: excellent, old leaves get a few spots and some yellow and drop off SIZE: probably medium - about 4-1/2' tall and 4-1/2' wide now but not yet filled out in all directions La Sylphide Blooms: pink with a sheerness to them; in heat they lighten to pale pink; nodding; very delicate and feminine in character Foliage: normal Thorns: typical Bloom frequency: not sure, not a heavy bloomer in its first year Fragrance: don't know Disease resistance: very good SIZE: on the small side - about 3' tall and 3' wide at 1-1/2 yrs old Sherry

FW and KP are two roses I am very happy with. They were both planted last year and so far both are showing to be very disease resistant in my no spray garden. FW is a small plant but has had a number of blooms. KP has bloomed less but is much taller than FW so its energy seems to have gone into growth. I like both of these roses a lot; they are both actually squeaky clean. One of the FW I have is sandwiched between sweet alyssum which has grown almost as tall as the FW and a row of zinnias behind that have gotten unruly and are cutting into FW's air and sun. NOne of this seems to bother FW, so I'm leaving it alone to see what happens. So, so far, so good and I'd like to get Garnet Crest as well sometime.

I think they all mean basically the same thing, Chanin. The way I look at it, "fasciation" is the scientific term for the cells in the meristem becoming spread out, and "cristation" describes the crested appearance that comes as a result of that phenomenon, but you could really use either term in most cases. They just refer to different aspects of the same thing. "Crested" seems less scientific and a bit more vague to me, since many things (like birds) can have crests but aren't necessarily fasciated. "Cristata" (or crestata?) is the latinized word that would be used as part of a botanical name, but you could refer to such a plant as a "cristate form" or just a "cristate". Thank you for the information about Garnet Crest- I almost bought this one last spring but purchased Krishna's Peach instead.

Would you be able to give similar information about it? I am hoping that it too is as disease resistant as I have seen Faith Whittlesey to be in my garden. .

Thank you mauirose for your appreciation. Sorry we have no vendor on the West Coast. We are only amateur hobbyist rose breeders.
duchesse_nalabama : Krishna's Peach is a smaller growing plant than Garnet Crest, and the flower colour is obviously different, but within the Tea range of color, and in our garden, like Garnet Crest, is very disease resistant.
I would like to post pics of the two roses but don't know how to go about it.

I am growing all 3 new Viru Tea Roses -- Faith Whittlesey, Garnet Crest and Krishna's Peach -- in Jacksonville, Florida. They are all extremely floriferous on compact plants that retain their foliage without any chemical spraying. In three or four years, Faith Whittlesey gets taller than the others -- which is still not too big, about 4 feet tall -- and begins to produce very large white blossoms on longer stems. I've had as many as 50 so far on a plant at one time. Like all Teas, they take a while to get started and then take off. Roses Unlimited handles them exclusively. RU also has a huge selection of Teas about 100 varieties -- see their list in the Sep/Oct American Rose. Vintage Gardens also carries a lot of Teas, but not the new Viru Teas.

Oh, thank you so much for answering my post, Girija and Viru! This is exactly the information I wanted. I have just planted Garnet Crest this weekend and will be so excited to watch her grow. I need roses that can stand up to heat and humidity!
