Rainbow Washed-Out

Does anyone else think that AARS made a bad choice when they picked Rainbow Knock Out? Okay I know it is disease resistant and has a good amount of blooms, but c'mon this rose is not appealing to me at all! I have only seen it looking very pale and washed out. Maybe it is a deep coral color at some stage but it must only last for seconds.

I just planted a climbing Rainbow this year and it is one of my favorites...the color is gorgeous! The blooms are huge and the yellow eyes are really a nice contrast with the coral; much prettier than I expected. The downside is that it is a big JB magnet; the JBs don't bother the other knockouts but love this one.

OC, I have to agree with you. I have 5 Rainbows and they blow very quickly. Most of the time the flower is a pail sickly looking white. The Japanese Beetles love them as well. I am going give them another year but as of this year they are on notice.

Now I am agonizing between these two.... As a tree how would Rainbow Knock Out compare to Pink Drift? I know the flower is smaller, but I'm wondering if Pink Drift might have less fading in the sun. Also, would amount of blooms and length of bloom time be as heavy. Are the Drifts constant bloomers like Knock Outs? Thanks for any help!!! I bought the Rainbow Knock Out but I keep reading over and over how it fades in the sun. I even went to one of my local nurseries and was able to find a few there from last year and sure enough... the blooms looked really faded and unattractive. I'm guessing it's a much better rose in parital shade...

Does your laundry room have a door? You could put something like a Key less dead bolt on it with a smart phone lock and unlock feature. I have one for my front door. I can use a key or I can type in a code or use my phone to lock and unlock it from anywhere. You can also assign temporary codes for service people. I got mine at home depot it is made by Schlage.

welcome to the forum... if you are going to hang around.. plz go back to you member's page.. and add your location.. so it shows in every post ... thx .. sun in GA is not the same in MN ... so it is imperative ... as noted above.. to know where you are ... hosta are only shade tolerant ... and can actually be more vigorous in sun ... but they can end up looking rather ratty by the end of summer ...and even though they get ugly.. they end up bigger next year.. because of the increased photosynthesis .... to avoid that ... the general rule .. is to avoid sun in the heat of the day .. hosta actually sweat ... transpire ... lose water ....so we dont want them.. on a daily basis.. running out of water.. during the heat of the day ... and so we try to avoid such ... with as much sun all the rest of the day ... if they do run low on water.. they get all crispy ... aka.. ugly ... the most important ones to avoid hot sun ... are the plants with white tissue.. as that is the tissue that is least likely to tolerate such ... all that said.. just plop it in the ground.. anywhere you want .. and if it gets ratty in late summer .. just move the darn thing for next year .. and if you feel it necessary.. discipline it with a few days on the driveway with little or no soil .. and then replant it ... it wont care .. and it will forever after know who exactly is in charge in your garden ... ken ps: again .. depending where you are .... july and august may or may not be the best time to be planting.. depending on how much after care you can provide ... there would be no harm in holding the pot until sept .... and planting them ... but this is more of a volume thing.. both in terms of number of plants and size of garden ... the idea that you might lose track of some .. and not provide the requisite water needed ... you should be able to focus on one plant ...

Now that you mention it -- yes, seems like it was gone and suddenly it's reappeared. I sent the link to "Very Stable Genius" to my parents, and my mom emailed me fairly late last night, saying they'd been having the BEST time watching all of his stuff they could find. Terryjean, I'm not familiar with a cl. Rainbow Knock Out. The only climber with rainbow in the title that I know if is Rainbows End.

I was skeptical at first also, thinking it was mislabeled. I purchased it this spring at Hoerrs Nursery in Peoria, IL, which is one of the largest rose retailers in our area. She had a metal stamped label Cl. Rainbow Knockout, and was in the hot house with other climbers, since I was shopping for a climber. Sure, enough, she's now about 4 feet tall and still growing in a pillar trellis. I also did not know there were climbing Knockouts on the market.

At first when I saw Rainbow knockout I was so excited
and purchased it right away without giving it another thought.
but now the more I look at it I kinda don't like it.
Its boring, the color, the look of it, blah.
My plant is still in the pot and I'm thinking about putting it in my mom's garden.

Here too, the usual appearance of the bloom is very disappointing - washed out, boring, blah - all of those. Mine was squeezed into a less than prime spot this spring and is now overgrown by other plants but I feel little inclination to move it to a better location. There's not much about it to warrant being shown off better.

Um, I've not heard of any climbing Knock Outs either. 4' tall isn't tall for them here, they get to 5' tall. There is Brite Eyes, which is from Bill Radler, the hybridizer of Knock Out, and it is a climber ("salmon" pink w/yellow eye).

Rainbow is "coral" when it first opens and for about 24 hours. Then it looks a lot like Blushing KO, pale pink. Nothng to write home about, IMO.

Man if there were a Climbing Knock Out - I'd be the first to buy. I said "Knock Out" --- Not "Rainbow..." I saw the Rainbow Knock Outs last October at the Tyler Rose Gardens and thought ---- "This won the AARS???" All of them looked like washed out messes. I never bought one and now I'm glad I didn't. I suspect this rose will vanish from retail and peoples gardens very soon!
