Huntsville area seed swap

For those of you in the northern part of the state, the Tennessee Valley Community Garden Association will be hosting the second annual Seed Celebration on Friday January 31st at the Church of the Nativity in downtown Huntsville.

Food and drink provided by local restaurants, breweries, and wineries. Doors will open at 6pm, and the keynote speaker will begin at 7:15. There is also live music by the Sandy City Ramblers.

The event is a benefit for the Sand Mountain Seed Bank, based in Albertville. A donation of $0-$30 is requested -- in the spirit of community, no one will be turned away.

I don't think there is one; TVCGA doesn't keep a website. When we get closer there will probably be a news article or two on WAATY or the AL.com site.

If I can answer any questions, please let me know. If I don't know I know who to ask.

for those of you who divides their plants I think it is perfectly fine if you dig up and bring it alone in plastic bag, moistened but not potted as long as it had decent root ball to go with. Mone if you have energy to swing by, I think everybody would be delighted. Primula sieboldii has gone dormant so all I could give you piece of soil and hope there is plant there LOL it is one of the primulas that completely dies back. I do have few others, with this cold summer my primulas are still blooming... I would love some fancy coleus cuttings I will pot up few seedlings of aconitum napellus and see if they survive. If anyone want to add petasites japonicus purpurea to their garden be my guest am not sure about rhubarb have to check what is growing there it did not bloom this year and it is rarely produces babies.

Hi Hannah... We have a regularly scheduled swap every spring and fall. It is now located in Manchaca under a great big pavilion offered to our group by the Methodist Church. This year we will have the swap during their Earth Day. So it should be quite busy! I see that our hostess has not yet listed the date, but I'm guessing it's some time in April. If you will email me directly I will be happy to get you put onto her invitation list and you will receive a personal notification via email. I have been attending these swaps with many of the same folks since our beginning in Zilker Park maybe about 15 years ago. Many of us also attend the swap in San Antonio. You are invited to both. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have if you'd like to send me an email. I hope you can come. Just saw this, and will try to attend. Due to work, I wasn't home much during this past summer, so haven't collected any seeds to exchange this year unfortunately. But I can certainly make a donation.

I am very new to this so please excuse my ignorance. I don't have seeds to swap, but would like good local seeds. Can I buy them at one of these events? Thank you for any help you can offer.

Possumpeg, you are welcome to come. Last year the swap was very informal; people added and took whatever they had or needed. There is no selling. There are some folks donating extra seeds, including my blog and also I think CT Garvin and Southern Exposure Seed Exchange both are sending some. The Sand Mountain Seed Bank will probably be bringing some as well.

However, we do not (yet) have a strong community of seed savers. Most of the seeds were commercial, parts of packets and so forth. Hopefully each year more people will bring seeds they saved themselves.
