Eglantyn w/ thin stems

Hi there,

My young rose shrub, an Eglantyn David Austin produced some rather thin stems this year. It has been transplanted from a former garden, overwintered in a pot in a protected spot and was planted early in the season in it's present place. It produced several blooms this season but it's stems were rather thin. On hindsight, I should have cut off the blooms to let it concentrate on root strengthening. What causes thin stems? I fear the root damage. It's planted in soil which has good organic content and bonemeal. I normally don't use artificial fertilizers. Can anyone make a recommendation on how to strenghten this plant? Thanks in advance.
