Edmunds' Roses

Does anyone know what is going on with Edmunds' Roses? Their web site does not come up for me and has not come up for several days now. Is there a story we should know about?

I was gonna post the same thing! I sure hope we haven't lost them now for good! Hopefully they're just updating the website. I have to say tho, I wasn't all that impressed with the roses I got from them last season. One died and the others are really slow to do anything. But I really want to replace the one that died (which was a replacement for my original that previously died) and that was ADOLPH HORSTMANN. They're the only source for it!! Well, Hortico lists it, but (surprise!) they don't currently have it available! Let's hope somone "in the know" will pop in and let us know what's up!

Hey, it would not surprise me if they were out of business. This past year, I placed an order and they sent me a rose with crown gall on it. It was packed intertwined with two other roses. I demanded that they replace all three which they did, but when they sent the replacements they came with the roots dried out as the moist bark was not wrapped properly. Being from Oregon and having dealt with the Edmunds family, this is a sad thing to me. If this company had been able to maintain the quality and level of care, it would have been a different story. 'Tis a shame as I was wanting to get Maria Shriver and Secret this next season and I haven't seen these anywhere else. We will see what happens. Best regards, CJ

Oh, I see they were sold to another company. I know when I ordered from them years ago, they had great customer service. I finally got the roses, they look fine, except one of them had a cane that was ripped so badly, I had to cut it off. I believe I am going to stick with J&P.

I, too, was surprised that the color of the flowers when it finally bloomed was _not_ exactly like the "glamour" photo in the Edmunds catalog. I know those are usually "retouched/photoshopped" to some extent, but I still expected the blurb to be accurate. It was very hot and humid here during the summer, with many days in the mid-90s. I know the blurb doesn't mention that Smokin' Hot is phototropic (blushes when hit by sunlight), but I did assume that's where the violet overlay/overtones came into the picture. I chalked it up to the hot and humid weather. But as the cooler fall weather arrived this still produced orange flowers. I will say, after I got over my initial disappointment in the color, I grew to like it. I'm partial to bicolors (I think Beth is, too) and can't think of any other HT or GR rose in this shade of orange with a cream/white reverse. The size of the flowers was nice, even growing the plant in a pot. The orange colored flowers age well: first to coral and then to pink with a slight hint of coral. A sidenote: The plant I received was HUGE with canes that were bigger around than my thumb. A monster for a bareroot. I grew Chrysler Imperial two years ago and it never developed a deep red color. To my eye it was always the deepest shade of pink velvet. I had Ketchup & Mustard for about three years, again from Edmunds. The first year the plant was a good producer. It did blackspot to some extent. The color of the flowers on the first day is stunning. The flowers blow fast though, so the flowers end up with just hints of the yellow reverse as they age. Each of the following years it grew backwards. I finally potted up the declining plant to give to a friend who loved the flowers and wanted to play nurse. I am pretty sure they are on Doc Huey. So far so good on these. I just remembered, that I did have an issue with one of the Distant Drums. It had some cracking around the base. I notified Edmunds and they sent me a new one right away and told me to keep the old one. So the customer service was really good for me with that issue. I am in NE FL so the nematode issues arent as bad as in So FL. Our soil is different. I believe we have some nematodes in the sandier areas. There is a lot of forest land with thick oaks, pines, etc here so the soil in those areas is rich. Some areas are a combination of sand and richer soil. I have some areas on our property that have straight orange clay and poor drainage. I have been using manures and do vermicomposting etc and try to be as organic as possible (although not 100%). I think all that has helped alot. We have mostly wooded areas on our property but there are some sandy areas where it is more challeging to grow stuff. But after 6 yrs of compost, those areas are much better than they were.

I got some I already have: Florentina is new- Going in the new Red & Cream garden area. Love Song- is a replacement for one that hated me. I blame Diane for making me want another one with all her luscious lavender & purple rose photos lol. Peach Swirl..I have several of these because I love them and so do the treefrogs! I dont know why they are so obsessed with striped roses but they are! EarthAngel - because I used the two that I had over by the side of the barn and I need another one for the new bed, that I am just starting out front. She is one of the few globular shaped roses that I have, besides jude lol. I really need more!

When I was at my mom's last month in Stafford, OR. Edmunds was having a HUGE Estate Sale at their nursery. It seemed like a garage/nursery sale. I really wanted to stop, but I remember all of the bad things I heard about the roses members received. (Plus I had 4 small children in the car, not advisable for a big Estate sale.) I think they have closed down. The sign for their nursery says, 'Closed' when you drive past it on Stafford Road.

Last year Edmunds was not Edmunds any more but Jung. However, before Edmunds sold out the nursery and the name to Jung I got a very disappointing clone of Maria Shiver from Edmunds. By the time I realized that the rose was doing nothing (wasn't dead but still a dwarf that barely flowers) Edmunds were not available any more. The other roses I got from them in the same order were disappointing, too but at least they bloom more or less (rather less than they should). My guess is that their growers didn't pay much attention to the quality having got the wind of EdmundsÂ closing down. Jung probably could not or didnÂt inspect the crop Â they might have assumed that they would get the quality Edmunds gained the name for.

Well, this is all second-hand (or third-hand) but this is what I heard. Apparently, the person at Jungs who bought Edmunds doesn't know anything about roses and insisted on packing all the roses himself. That's why roses with crown gall and other problems were shipped out. Jungs got a lot of complaints from Edmunds customers and were losing money on all the replacements. Jungs is probably going to let Edmunds go out of business for good this time and I heard a rumor that Jungs might not last much longer itself. That would be sad as I rather like having a Jungs Garden Center just down the street from me.

I just spoke via phone with an Edmunds' rep by name of Karen. She said that the 2008 catalog will be mailed in October, and that the website is currently being worked on/updated.

Edmunds' site is again up and available. No new '08 stuff yet . . .
