How big does Double Pink Knockout really get?

I'm trying to decide where to put a Double Pink Knockout rose and wanted to know if it really gets 3-4 feet tall and wide like the tag says. Is it generally taller than it is wide? Also would it do ok in a southeastern exposure (morning sun until about 2 p.m.)?

I did never see them taller than 4 feet. They tend to be taller than larger but are not thin, not like HTs with huge naked canes I mean. More like 2.5-3 large.
Yes, they like the sun, mine get about 6-7 hours sun.
Other charming small roses are two ancient china roses: hermosa and minima. Well, I like to mix different roses, but maybe you don't.

You ask an interesting question. I don't grow d. pink KO but I have red KO which is listed as growing 2-4' tall. It rarely gets over 3' tall in my z4 area but I was recently doing some checking on roses for my son who lives in Atlanta, GA. When I corresponded with a rosarian in the Atlanta area, he had planted red KO as a foundation plant by his house because of the advertized height. After a couple of growing seasons he was using a step ladder & hedge trimmer to keep his red KO'S under 6' tall. I've heard similar stories about other shrub roses, i.e. Dr. Buck's Carefree Beauty gets much larger in warm zones than it does here in z4. So you being in z7 will probably get the largest hxw listed on the tag & maybe even larger.

I have a corner hedge of Pink Double Knock Outs and I love them as shrubs. It does not matter to me that they are not considered a true rose lovers cultivar. They are wonderful where I have them planted, They have stayed in bounds for the last 3 years since I have planted them, and they are the best shrubs I could have planted to outline this particular Northeast and Northwest lighting, and wind exposure corner. There is a 15 foot tall, maybe 5 inch wide trunked, and 9 foot wide canopied Shumard oak tree growing only about 12 feet South of them. They are even planted on a two foot tall berm to prevent them from suffering root rot from the neighbors water runoff that saturates that corner of our lot. In the Dry seasons this corner berm gets pretty dry, but still they did not die during our very long drought seasons a couple years ago. No other shrub Rose cultivar, I know of, could have survived as nicely or grown to perform and look so nice, as my Pink Double KO shurbs. Another Rose I love for growing in difficult locations is the 'Fairy' cultivar spreading rose. I planted 4 of these along the West facing edge of a 5 foot deep drainage ditch on a vacant, half acre residential lot where it took to much effort to consistantly supply needed supplimental watering. Still through the driest of years these Fairy roses have survived. They did not manage to spread and re-root at their growing tips as they grow, like they would have if kept watered properly; still each initially planted bush has remained alive, continued to establish well and even slowly fill in nicely. They even have managed to continuously bloomed each growing season long; until the first frost that often times has not arrived until late November during lots of recent years.

You might need a chain saw instead of a hedge trimmer. I am not kidding! Keep in mind that Knockout has some pretty lethal thorns. They can shred thick leather gloves. If you have more than a few, it can be very hard to keep up with grooming them. They are disease resistant, but they ARE NOT disease or pest free. Both regular Knockout and Double Knockout have their own charm. Double Knockout has prettier blooms, in my opinion, and they are brighter. I once had 53 regular Knockouts and currently have 3 Double Knockouts. ALL the regular Knockouts have been removed and replaced with various china and tea roses. One of my mass plantings now consists of Archduke Charles. He is wonderful, and his thorns are reasonable. He is also much more disease and pest free. I don't know if you live in an area where you can grow china roses, but it is worth checking them out. Last spring (2006) I was badly cut up from pruning Knockouts, despite wearing protection. I mean dangerously cut up. I have decided to remove the three Double Knockouts near my walkway. They are somewhat grungy looking and need to be groomed, but I do not want to get near them to take care of them because of the thorns. They also have a stiff habit of growth to them. If you're looking for a retail garden center location to purchase the Pink Double Knock Out rose or any other Novalis Plants that Work selection, their Web site offers a great search capability for locating the nearest garden center to you. Also, like any other Internet site, it's likely that the Novalis site may have been undergoing updates at the time you last visited. I have never had problems accessing information from it in the past. Also, the Pink Double Knock Out will be widely available this summer and fall. It may currently be available in limited locations in your area, but you should be able to find it at a variety of locations near you by the end of the summer for fall planting... it will be well worth the wait! And, it is truly a bright pink color. Whaas, it has also been a weak grower for me. My spouse had planted five of them in different parts of the garden; all were marginal after about five years. I recently moved the entire lot to the front of a mixed border in partial shade. It's do or die -- literally.

I grow Double Knock Out and I prune it hard to approx 4x4 each spring and again later in summer to keep it on average ~6x6 size. It wants to be more like 8x8 w/o prunning in my garden. The size will depend on the amount of water you provide. If you don't supplement any water it will stay small. I have drip irrigation and water my roses well, they tend to be on the bigger side.

Olga, now that you tell me I see, and you are right, thank you! see, my tallest DKO (red, not pink, but should not make much difference) is in the most rainy area of the garden, where the rain from the roofs is collected and goes into the soil. Theothers have grown well, but less. I thought it was the good exposure! Now I understand it was the rain.

PS: DKOs do not like shadow Might be obvious to you all, wasn't to me. Cornelia did very well, the DKO was dying. I moved it into the sun, and it started growing and blooming.
