Pretty Jessica
Comments (33)SHARIFA ASMA is a fantastic rose (IMHO David Austin's best pink) that can be grown over a wider climatic range, but her flowers do look different. Sharifa is lighter and the pink is warmer in tone. The flower form is also not as "tight". In my Mid-Atlantic garden AUSjess, which I've nicknamed "Free Jessica" because David Austin holds the rights ON THE NAME, has deeply cupped to globular flowers that are lilac to lavender on the outer petals, blushed a deeper cherry pink in the middle. I have Sharifa on the west side of my house, which is dominated by bright, Easter-egg-like pastels. FREE JESSICA is in a flower bed in the front (North-East), which has a cool color theme (lilac-pinks, lavender, blue, ivory, glistening white, and silvery gray). Sharifa is also a bigger rose in my Temperate zone 6b climate. In M-A-R-Y-L-A-N-D. a well cared for Sharifa Asma is capable of reaching 4-5 feet in all directions. Don't believe me? Just ask Olga. She has pictures. FREE JESSICA stays put at approximately two feet. Paul, I'm sorry AUSjess was such a dog in your Pacific Northwest garden. For East-coast rosarians in zones 4/5/6, she is a very beautiful and much appreciated rose. In my garden her only fault is a propensity for blackspot, which IS controllable with spraying. Comments (8)It depends on whether you want Cutting roses foe taking them inside or you are just interested in a beautiful garden display. They have numerous roses that have ADR certificate which means that they should be resistant to PM, blackspot and rust, should be drought tolerant and self-cleaning. My floral fairy tale, Cinderella (fairy taleand Caramelle Fairy Tale are not ADRcertified because I must deadhead then; other than that they clean (caramella might have a few spots, not blackspot though. Of the climbers Laguna is awesome: clean and has wonderful fragrabce. I wish I could find a good spot for accommodating to order Kordes'climber, Aloha. so far I mentioned a few landscape plants I bought from them last year. In the HT category, in case you are interested, I would look at Caramel Antike and a few Freelander HTs - depending your color preference. They have other older HTs as well and those roses are very good. I would definitely buy Papa Meilland and Valencia from them and Would ask for 'leftover' Barkarole. THey alo list a number of old garden roses that would (should( work in your zone; I cannot comment on those, becasue they would probably not do well here in the southeast. And, mosy importantly, do not be afraid to ask questions or recomendations from the owner. I would...See MorePope John Paul II rose in UK
Comments (25)Darren, What! I have read* that the reason Pope John Paul II is not carried by the big rose houses in England is because its name brings anti-Catholic sentiment forward among some Englishmen. Such individuals would not purchase it for that reason. This lovely rose's name causing such a rejection leaves me dumbfounded. It was commented also that Thompson & Morgan, mostly a seed merchant, is the only source of it in England, an unusual situation.....a seed company selling a rose plant, and a controversial one, to boot. What further amazes me is that the decline in Christianity in Europe, churches becoming historical, architectural museums and tourist destinations, instead of houses of worship, would indicate to me that the populace's sentiments would cause them to care less about a rose being named in honor of a deceased Catholic patriarch. Sorry for your setback. Be patient Darren, and continue trying very hard to get Pope John Paul II. It is worth the effort. Try to get it grafted, if at all possible. I believe grafted, it will grow more vigorously, produce bigger and more abundant blooms. Moses *refer to the post on the Antique Roses Forum: -this post is in regards to the Austin rose, Roald Dahl- "I, for one, will NOT be ordering the new Ronald Dahl! EVER!" posted by David Beck. Comments (168)I am speechless… What an amazing thread! Thank you, Helen! and Everyone for your lovely photos & comments on NYRP roses. I tried perusing most of it this evening! I am new to NIRP roses but after seeing a few weeks ago Helen’s roses I choose a few for my spring list from Palatine. Also, I have been eyeing a few of them from your garden photos on other threads. I am so excited to order in Dec.: 1. Rosemantic Pink 2. Rosaraie du Chatelet 3. Maybe Rosemantic Fushia/ or Kordes-Dark Desire Parfuma (Can’t decide.) Rosemantic Cream & Anastasia are gorgeous-love them, too! @Ceres , Love your Forever Rose, do you know if it is BS resistant. @Amanda Dickerson, I see you have BS, too, looking for resistant roses. Me, too. After reading your experoence w/BS on NIRP roses I am concerned, but wish to try a few. However, I have had great success w/Kordes roses & Meilland roses not getting BS-the most resistant in my garden. I have Polar Express, , Earth Angel, Summer Romance, Beverly, Wedding Bells, Madame Anisette, Pomponella , Cinderella, Lions Fairy, & more Kordes doing well-almost no BS. I have Francis Meilland, Princess Charlene de Monaco, Ives Piaget, Cream Ives Piaget (Classic Woman) Meillands-almost no BS. Almost any rose can get BS if sitting in water-with way too much rain this year, but many had zero BS anyway. They are the best BS resistant roses I have out of a hundred roses almost. I have others if you need a longer BS resistant list. Savanna is BS resistant-zero BS! Carol, Thanks for pointing out this thread. I am so busy…I am missing these anazing threads! @kathyc_z10 Kathy, Thank you for your photos of Roseraie Du Chatelet -what a magnificent rose-love its name-it’s color is beautiful & excited about its vigorous growth! NIRP ROSES are so lushious! THANK YOU, everyone! again for your comments & photos on NIRP International roses & website. What a wonderful company of superb roses! Can’t wait to put in my first order for them!...See MoreUser
