Fragrance! Which roses do you HAVE to have?
Comments (100)Fascinating to read in the article you linked to, Anna-Lyssa, how researchers scientifically measure the scents within and around flowers. The variations in results referred to suggest to me that the variations that rose growers report in how they experience a particular rose's scent may not be always necessarily due to different clones of the plant or to differences in the person's capacity to smell, but to external factors too, such as regional differences, including the effect of different soils, climates and microclimates and other very specific localised conditions. Maybe this is related to the concept of 'terroir' in wine grape growing, where the flavour of a finished single-variety wine can be greatly influenced by the soil and location in which the vines grew; even whether they were on, for example, the southern slope or the eastern flat of one particular field!...See MoreFrancis Dubreuil in FL?
Comments (14)He likes a little pampering, in the way of lots of organic fertilizer and compost, and plenty of water in the summer -every day, unless you get a ton of rain. Actually, all the old roses thrive on that, but Francis will reward you with prettier foliage and more flowers if he gets those two things. If he's neglected some, he'll still be fine, as I haven't been out in the heat much this year, although I gave him some "goodies" about 6 weeks ago. Slow release fertilizer is a HUGE help this time of year. I have all my roses on automatic drip irrigation....See MoreFrancis Dubreuil in Deep South
Comments (13)All roses sold as FD are actually the old HT Barcelona; there is actually no dispute about that nowadays. Its blackspot susceptibility is normal for a HT, if not slightly worse than average. I consider the plant habit as somewhat tea-or-china-like, airy and branching without a lot of basal shoots. It does burn in the hot sun like most dark red roses. Bloom is nearly continuous, with consistently very fragrant flowers. Those flowers that develop lots of petals have beautiful old-fashioned form; those with fewer petals are loose and cupped. It is a rewarding rose if you spray. A couple of red roses that might be OK without fungicide are Eutin and Traviata. Neither is fragrant. Dame de Coeur is sometimes suggested, but I have no experience with it. I suspect it would need occasional spray....See MoreFrancis Dubreuil in a container?
Comments (17)Hoov, Thanks so much for the info on your deadheading technique with FD. That pretty much explains our difference in size by fall. I might try an experiment next year, and deadhead FD much less hard and see how it does. But b/c about two-thirds of my roses are in 15 gallon pots, I'm always looking to keep the medium to big fellas more in line, with blooms more at eye level. :-D Jim, The whole FD vs. Barcelona debate has been going on for years. I used to pay a lot of attention to these things, but not so much now. Last time I really paid attention (a coupla years ago), the conclusion was that the FDs and Barcelonas currently available are the same rose, and that the real FD is probably lost. These debates are fairly common regarding various roses. It's always interesting to hear the debates and the final consensus! Susan...See Moretrue_blue
