Barcelona/Francis Dubreuil in zones 5-6?
Comments (14)Ispahan - thanks for the encouragement to post about my experiences with hardiness and winter protection in zone 5. I guess I'm a good test location for toughness in zone 5, given all of our ups and downs all year. I'll start a new thread, actually several threads, in the Roses forum since you'd asked about HTs and other moderns. Once I checked back through my records, I found quite a few HTs and Floris that are reliably cane hardy in my zone 5 yard, and it'll be interesting to see if that carries through for others of you in zone 5 or folks like Michael in zone 6 mountains. I'll wait till fall to post something about my strategies for winter protection in cold zones, since it's largely too late to worry about it now and it'd get lost by the time folks wanted to remember it. I did take Melissa's advice too and posted a comment for Barcelona with the information I mentioned here. I'd be happy to send that in an email to the HMF folks as well, including my other personal hardiness observations, but I couldn't find an email on the site even with a premium membership. I do have the intent to contribute to that site since I rely on it all the time, but time gets away (I started posting my garden last fall and only got through the A and B on my list). Comments (1)Some folks think the rose sold as FD is actually a early HT called Barcelona. I'd bet it would be hardier than some HTs especially if you get one on its own roots. I grew this rose in zone 4/5 but I had it in a pot and overwintered it in my unheated garage....See MoreFragrance! Which roses do you HAVE to have?
Comments (100)Fascinating to read in the article you linked to, Anna-Lyssa, how researchers scientifically measure the scents within and around flowers. The variations in results referred to suggest to me that the variations that rose growers report in how they experience a particular rose's scent may not be always necessarily due to different clones of the plant or to differences in the person's capacity to smell, but to external factors too, such as regional differences, including the effect of different soils, climates and microclimates and other very specific localised conditions. Maybe this is related to the concept of 'terroir' in wine grape growing, where the flavour of a finished single-variety wine can be greatly influenced by the soil and location in which the vines grew; even whether they were on, for example, the southern slope or the eastern flat of one particular field!...See MoreMr. Rupert, re: Francis Dubreuil
Comments (36)Sounds like with enough water and perhaps shade Barcelona does well even in California, but Kim undoubtedly doesn't have enough of either naturally. That makes sense that it would appreciate our cold winters if it's German, and it's certainly tough enough! That's interesting that 'Chateau de Clos Vougeot' is at least as vigorous as Nigrette, though I realize it's not saying much. I'd backed out of buying the former because of the wretched reviews on HMF, but Nigrette has done reasonably well for me (yes, short and scrawny, but fairly hardy), and I dearly LOVE that dark black-burgundy color. As long as they survive and put out those blooms, I'll put up with their mangy excuse for foliage, and I can always disguise the effect with some annual salvia in the front. Looks like I might be adding that one back to my Burlington order for the spring. Good going to get FD/Barcelona, Josh. To appeal to the OGR snob effect you mention, you can always derive some satisfaction from the story of the mixup of the variety, and a good story can compensate for a relatively less old heritage in a worthy rose.
