Some insect is enjoying my 'rosebush buffet'

Hi everyone,

I have 6 rosebushes in my teensy-weensy garden. This year I have insects that are taking huge "bites" out of the leaves of the some of the rosebushes. The surprising thing is that I never see the bugs. I work in the day but I check every evening around 5:00 PM and see nothing except the huge sections they've eaten in the leaves. I've looked under the leaves for catapillars but, no, nothing. After reading several comments on this (fabulous) site, I'm inclined to think Japanese beetles are the culprits but I'm very surprised I haven't spotted them (particularly on weekends). I have a great picture of some of the leaves but I haven't figured out how to upload the pic to the group. Any idea? Many thanks for your ideas and advice!
