Need suggestions: Firefighter & Francis Meilland
Comments (8)Sara, I have had similar results but for different reasons. I also planted mine, both 5 gal plants, in the last part of May 2013. Firefighter has been puny and not many blooms. But this spring (my plants think it's spring) it has a lot of new growth so I am hopeful. FM was fine for a while then went puny also. (Both FF and FM are in the same bed) But for a different reason. The canes started looking like they were dying. I looked closely and found a canker about the size of a lemon. It was not there long, I watch my babies like a hawk. My local Rosarian said that if it developed that quickly it was one of the more aggressive type cankers and that I should remove it and a lot of the soil around it quickly. (I put it in the trash so it wouldn't be composted). I did what she said and drenched the soil with a light bleach solution. Then several months later, used Physan on it. I bought another FM about 4 or 5 months ago and put it in a 15 gal pot to sit and grow (I hoped) till the ground was ready to plant another FM in. I just did that about one month ago and the new FM is looking GREAT!. Very vigorous and beautiful foliage. It's just a LITTLE warmer here than where you are. We are already having spring growth AND RAINNNNN!!! finally Hope your answers are as easy. (Well not exactly easy, but at least clear cut) andreark...See MoreUpdates please! on your Frances Meillands
Comments (39)My Francis Meilland is into it's third year in 2020. It is taller than I had realized, topping over 5'. Each cane has one flower on a long stem, a hybrid tea trait. So I get around three ENORMOUS flowers each blooming cycle. The blooms have an old fashioned quartered center, but their size is so gigantic, that this becomes a side issue, rather than looking romantic. Foliage is blackspot and mildew resistant, but does get a bit of rust. All in all, I don't like this rose, finding it gawky. It is not elegant. However it is easy to grow and the large size / flowers might impress others. Scent is good. This is Francis Meilland. The big whitish blob. There is one other bud on this plant. To left is Stormy Weather, a climbing rose....See MoreFrancis Meilland, Love Song, Veterans Honor
Comments (15)Thank you everyone - I think Francis Meilland wins the day. It truly is a beautiful hybrid tea with that classic look and a wonderful fragrance, and seems to be disease resistant, you can't do better than that. For me it has taken a little patience, but it has been worth it. I think Andrea from Michigan had a bush shot of it last year, that might actually be a better climate for it. Hers was beautiful....See MoreFrancis Meilland
Comments (32)I love this rose too. I am looking to add another one to the garden. But I must warn you that he is rather tender and will die back to the ground in your winter. Please make sure that you bury his graft a couple of inches below soil level. I will do the same for my new one if I get another this year. I am not sure if my current one will make it as his canes have all died to the graft which is at soil level....See Moreseil zone 6b MI
