Two others well worth trying are Mrs. B. R. Cant and Trinity, both of which are quite resistant. Also Smith's Parish and Red Smith's Parish are pretty good.

It really is a great rose isn't it? Even here, it does very well. I looked on the "lineage" tab on HMF and the only sport listed is the climbing version. There's also only two other decendants listed: "Thanksgiving" is a first generation descendant (never would have thought that!!!)and 'Adam Messerich' is a second generation.

I can't remember what rose I was looking for descentants of recently, but I ended up with zero...so I guess three is better than none :)

Isn't there an insecticide that can be used just for these chili thrips? I think I've read something, and my friend Carol used something that worked. Do you have to let them win, Sally? Do you have a really bad infestation?

Thank you for the response, the 2 you mention Tammy I have not heard of but will investigate, I don't know how they would do here in Fla., and Sherry, I could start spraying again, Spinosad and Bayer 3 in 1 are suppposed to be effective, but I now have a nice colony of butterflys and bees, and even a Hummingbird! yay! so am trying to find roses that the Chili Thrips, and BS, don't like... and nothing seems to bother Louis P., also Spice, and Ducher, and Mrs. BR Cant, and Prosperity... so maybe they have some sort of nasty taste, or oil, or whatever, that makes them resistant.... also, I have noticed that the Drift roses, 2 coral, and 2 red, seem to be clean... but maybe the thrips have just by-passed them, who knows? anyway, the OGRs seem to be fairly resistant, some are better than others, certainly a lot better than the 'modern' roses... Belinda's Dream has defoliated a lot but is putting out more growth and buds, so she does have some resistance... these thrips like a lot more than roses, they have invaded my peppers, what's on the bush is shrivelled and twisted, so yes, I guess I have a bad infestation... I'll have to gradually find roses that are resistant...or spray... sally

I don't have chili thrips, but several of the other older chinas-Napoleon, Jean Bach Sisley, even Mutabilis are nearly blackspot resistant. Also the deer leave them alone. Likewise with the noisettes. Like you, I have found that most of the OGR are much more resistant to everything. The newer the class and the newer the rose, the weaker the immune system. Roses haven't survived for tens of thousands of years by being whimps, but our breeding programs haven't been as strenuous asa mother nature's. I don't know about some of the newer roses where they are trying to breed diseases resistance back in.

RRD came thru my garden like wildfire two years ago. It took almost all my hybrid musks (most with multiflora in their genes), but left me all my gallicas, moss, noisettes and most hybrid perpetuals. It did get several chinas (including LP) and the newer polys. I've replanted LP and several others in new spots (away from the wind currents that brought the RRD).

Sally, I was worried about losing my beneficial population also and was reluctant to spray anything. I have butterflies, lizards, dragonflies, assasin bugs and ladybugs like crazy, in addition to a zillion tree frogs. Chilli thrips got into almost all of the roses in my garden. I'd say the only roses that seemed resistant were Koko Loco, Cherry Parfait & Purple Tiger. None of my antiques seemed resistant, though Maman Cochet, SdLM and Niles Cochet fared better. Leveson Gower and Miss Atwood looked pretty terrible! Anyway, I did end up spraying spinosad twice and it DID help. I cut everything back a little also. New growth is coming out clean and I'm actually getting normal looking leaves and flowers again. SO FAR, I haven't noticed a difference in the beneficial population.

I think I'll just shovel-prune my KOs, they are such a chili-thrip magnet... when I went out this morning and checked, it seems the thrips are starting to go away, but not on the KOs... but most of the others are showing new clean growth, and of course, Louis P. is clean as ever.. also Ducher, Bermuda Kathleen, Spice, Champney's Pink C.,... most of the OGRs are doing fairly well, but Julia Child looks bad, she is prob. going, but she also has canker from early spring when we had such wet weather, and now we are getting so much rain they don't really dry out, and the canker spreads all around the canes and that is the end.... most of the Moderns are in such bad shape they will prob. die, they are maybe a quarter of my garden.... if I replace them it will be China and/or Noisettes or old Teas... they are best here in this climate....sally
