Joe I want Roger, I want him bad!!!! OMG, that is the first time I have seen a picture of this rose, wow, oh wow. I am really into striped and bi color roses among my pinks and this one is the most wanted rose on my list now. Must go see if he would be hard here. I just looked it up in my old copy of Botanica, it is hardy here but they recomend Baron Girod de l'Ain whom I planted last spring. I loved it's unusal blooms but this one looks even better. I once grew Madame Hardy, she was like a bride in the early summer covered in her white blooms, you won't regret planting her, she is beautiful. Also love the form of LaFrance. There's nothing quite as cool-looking(temperaturewise) as BLUE flowers. I grew Phacelia a few years ago, best blue i ever saw, next to cornflowers. The bell-shaped blue flowers with icy-white anthers were beautiful, and stirred up images of cooler weather. They do have a short bloom time, hot weather just about stops the show, cutting back helps somewhat. Give 'em a try, i believe there are 2 or 3 varieties. Good luck, and enjoy.

For climbing roses I would suggest John Cabot. It is a vigorous Explorer that gets quite tall in my yard. My 16 year old John Cabot was 6-7 ft tall last year. Mine is always covered in dark pink blooms. Each flower has a faint smell, but when it is covered in flowers.....what can I say. I never take mine down for the winter. I just pile snow on it. I planted another one last spring and it is about 4 ft now.I would imagine that it should get almost as tall as my other one. The base of my older one is about 5 ft wide or more when leafed out. I also have John Davies, but wouldn't suggest it for an arbour. Mine must be about 5 yrs old and last year finally reached about 5 ft tall. It have mine planted in my front yard with a black obelisk. I much perfer the flowers and smell of this one though. Another favorite of mine is little leaf lilac. It has a very long blooming time and grows to about 5 ft tall. Perenials, Phlox and Dianthisis, Saponaria (Soapwort) and Peonies all have nice scents. Some of the iris' and daylilies smell too. You can also buy plants with foilage that smells. Salvia nemorosa (or blue sage)has a nice smell. I have also sage in white and a pinkish/purple . Although I do perfer the blue. Perovskia atriplicifolia (Russian Sage) also smells quite nice when you brush the leaves. Artemisia (silver mound) leaves smell and look great with green leaved plants. Sugar Daddy Petunias are my favorite smelling annual. Pansies and Evening Stocks smell wonderful too. I hope we all have given you some ideas for your scent garden. Shelley

Well I'm NOT a blue person. Indoors I have NO blue. My husband doesn't understand this. I have no idea why I feel this way. Outdoors things are different! I have a blue/yellow/white garden bed which I love. Yes, delphineums, catananche, campanulas, baptisia and more, are mixed with trollius, coreopsis moonbeam, peony Claire de Lune and low growing white clematis and aquilegia. It is a big mix and wouldn't be any fun at all without the blue! There are loads of clematis that are purple or blue/purple, but also some very nice blues I think. You do get into the question of "what is blue?" My husband and I think this could well be a male/female issue! "Victoria Blue" Salvia is the closest thing. I use it a lot. It is such a heavy, long bloomer, and about one in twenty of them will survive winter here. Just wish I could predict which would survive so that I could save seed from those alone and perhaps work up a more hardy strain. By the way, the Hydrangeas in Memphis, Tennessee are incredible. It's a little too purple and doesn't look right as a "patriotic" design. I will probably tear out the red and white and keep the "blue" (purple) since it seems to like this desert heat. Someone mentioned black flowers, and I remembered seeing black pansies in the most recent Burpee catalog. They're a beautiful velvety black with a spot of yellow in the center. I like the blue flowers, rather than the blue foliage plants. And no, blue is NOT my favorite color - I have nothing blue in my home decor. I just like the uniqueness of the TRUE blue and my stubbornness to get people to stop calling it purple!!!!
