Louis Ginter Fall Plant Sale

I played hookey this morning. I'm supposed to be finishing my presentation on Rose Photography that I have to give on Sunday, but my brain was beginning to fry. I can only prepare so much . . . then I have to just get up there and talk.

To clear my head, and to reward myself for choosing all the photos for my presentation, I decided to head to the Lewis Ginter Fall plant sale to see if there was anything wonderful that I can't live without. At the very least, a friend of mine has a booth there, and I could shoot the breeze with him for a little while.

Rick's Custom Nursery always has a good selection of unusual plants, and today was no exception. I left with some Rodgersia, japanese anemone, and two of those little Angel Wings mini China roses -- a double white and a single pink.

I found the best treasures at the Louis Ginter booth, and I had to tell the rest of you -- they are selling the roses that they have left over from their new rose garden they put in this year . . . from Roses Unlimited! ...and they're $12. If you are in the vicinity and you're inclined to stop by, you may find a treasure too. There was a good supply of Green Ice, some random David Austin's, a beautiful Russell's Cottage or two, some Red Cascade, Iceberg, Engelmann's Quest (from ARE), and a bunch that had tags so faded we couldn't read them.

I picked up Mrs. R. M. Finch, Borderer, and Mystic Beauty.

Hi Connie,
Wish I had known you were there; I was in the library from 10-1 cataloging some new books. Went early so could have a look see before my library duties. Lovely booths with lots and lots of lovely things. Bought 2 bearded iris from the Iris Society (a tall and a border) and spotted lilacs in the Louis Ginter Tent so bought one for my sister for the NY house. I considered myself very good and very disciplined today LOL but lots of temptations were to be seen.

I don't know about the others but I can tell you that Mystic Beauty is a spectacular rose. I only minimally and erraticly spray and it has been a healthy, happy bloom machine!

New_garden, What part of Texas? Ogrose and I are in N. Dallas, and I follow the same protocol as her. I pot them up in 1 gallons and let them acquire some decent size before I will put them out in the ground. If a good freeze is on its way I will protect them, but other than that when they're ready to be planted I stick in the dirt and let them go. Josh

J0nd03- that ft.mcnair is a beautiful tree. Ill have to see what the specs are on it as far as tolerances/preferences. Tornado- no offense taken at all, I'm quite long winded myself (I am a car salesman!) and I love taking politics but unfortunately from what I have learned (perhaps its the area we live in?) most discussions about politics/govt matters turn into a pissing contest/yelling match because when someone has a differeing view than I yet cannot support their claims/reasons for their beliefs they get defensive and resort to un civilized behavior. I think it's hilarious but sure you have experenced it as well! ;) I really appreciate the info your giving me. From what I have read/picked up from folks (a good friend of mine is a horticulture major/landscape business owner) these beech trees will maintain their vibrant foliage as long as they are kept hydrated. I'm site the tree in your pics gets pruned/pest control done professionally and regularly but I'm not sure about the watering part too much?

If anyone here besides me lives in NE Oklahoma, there's Hollman seed in Collinsville, they sell bulk seed, reasonable prices. Also wheat in the fall that they say some people buy to grind for flour. I've not bought any of that but might give it a try. I have new tomatoes started for fall, I keep them in the shade under my carport, won't plant them in the garden till probably early Sept. Thanx for the reminder, I must get cabbage seed planted and some other winter stuff. I'll try spinach for fall. Something ate all my spring spinach right down to the ground, several times, so I didn't get any of it.

Thanks, I asked Jim Waddick today at the HPS sale in Kansas City, and he recommended I leave it alone. So...that's what I'll do. I bought some peonies at the sale that I didn't really expect to get...but my impulses got the better of me. Tree Peonies: Homei $20, Seidai $22. Herbaceous: Lollipop Lies $5, Paul Wild $8, Pink Parfait $8, Angel Cheeks $15. I think the herbaceous ones were from Klehm's Song Sparrow. Now I just need to find places in the yard for them...and buy lots more dirt. I hope the tree peonies can weather full sun on the west of my house. The tree peonies are maybe 10" tall, so I don't expect much from them for awhile...but I'll be patient. Earlier this year I planted the following herbaceous: Louis Van Houtte, Raspb Sundae, Solange, Dr. Alex Fleming, Kansas, Red Charm, and Mons Jul Elie. I already have Sorbet and Edulis Superba...so I'm really looking forward to next spring and the years to come. Last but not least, Waddick recommends planting peonies with the eyes 1" deep, and then as the soil settles you can fill in above it with 1 more inch for the final depth of 2"...at least in the Kansas area he recommends that.

Jim, I thought you'd still be in NY so I didn't ask about you. Shoot! Are going to be around for my garden social in Oct?

Carole, I was almost giddy when I realized that the faded tag said Mystic Beauty. I'm really excited to have it. I had tried to order this one (and Borderer) earlier this year, but RU was out of them. I guess they must have sent them all to Richmond. :)

I stopped by for a quick peek too.. Found the Delbard St. Exupery, Bouquet Parfait,and I picked up a hybrid Tea called Watercolors because the foliage looked spotless. I kept picking up Borderer and putting it back down.
