On the bitter sweet, but beautiful thread about Ralph Moore's Sequoia Rose Nursery, Burlington Rose Nursery was mentioned. Thank you Anita. Burling was an employee at Sequoia.

I called Burling to inquire about some hard to find roses that I had been looking for and just today I received some WONDERFUL roses in band sizes. She offers roses in several size pots. The bands are only $10.50 and the shipping cost was very reasonable too.

The long list of offerings that was sent with the shipment is very inviting to say the least. It's almost like the good ole days with Sequoia Nursery so I thought I'd pass the information along where everyone would see it.

The Burlington site is under construction, but you can email her to get a rose list mailed.

I can echo that - my bandsized Snowbird that I received earlier this year is blooming and healthy. Lovely rose. In fact, everything I got from her is doing well:

Snowbird

I love having another good source for roses.

Oh good I just got a list of their roses mailed to me. I understand their a good resource for propagating roses

If my memory serves me correctly, a man by the name of Carl Pallek had a first rate rose nursery in Saskatchewan in Canada, selling mainly Kordes roses. I was a Canadian customer and they were first rate in comparison to other nurseries selling roses.When he got to retirement age, none of his children were interested in carrying on the business. He closed it down and moved to Ontario. When Rene Palatine came to Canada from Switzerland, having owned an organic nursery there, Mr Pallek helped him set up his business in Ontario. The Palatine nursery is still an organic one in Canada. Palatine holds a high standard for their roses and will be carrying many of the older ones. When I downsized from my large rose garden, I sent over 80 pieces of budwood from my first rate older roses that I got from Vintage and other OGR nurseries in the States. So hopefully you will be seeing some of your favourites on the list in the future.

There's really something magical that happens when Tea meets Polyantha. I noticed this as I was looking up the class, and made my list of favorites -- virtually all had Tea ancestry. For those of us not gardening in the land of endless Summer, this means we get to have a taste of the delicacy and fragrance of the old Teas in roses that can handle Winter. Jeri, have you grown 'Etoile de Mai'? It and your "white lady" are on my list. I know we're not in the same climate, but I'm wondering how you can compare it to 'White Cecile Brunner'. :-) ~Christopher

Yes, her roses are healthiest among the 4 nurseries I ordered. Which means no thrips, no virus, no mites, no disease. She's a detailed person and manages her nursery well. If a rose doesn't look right, she throws it away as a precaution. Her price is the cheapest for band-size. She has a large selection of 160 mini-roses at $7.50 each, and 389 big roses at $10.95 to choose from. Compare that to the $20 rose infected with Rose Rosette Disease that I bought at local Home Depot last year. California, where Burlington Nursery is, doesn't have Rose Rosette Disease, and there's strict agricultural laws governing shipping of roses: soil-less potting mix so insects can't be transmitted.

Thanks for the good wishes. We all had a wonderful time. Jenna,(the bride) will have quite an adjustment to make, after the honeymoon. She's going from living on a large dairy in CA, to Chicago, IL. She spent the past year in charge of the calves on the dairy, starting at 4:30am each day, bottle and bucket feeding hundreds of them. She worked very hard, physically. I'm sure apartment living, Chicago winters, and office work will take some getting used to. I don't know who did the flowers, Diane. I'm guessing a local florist, and not a family friend, or I would have heard about it. You're right, Carol. I've never really thought about it, but roses do play a significant role in many ceremonies. I wonder how that began, and why roses in particular? Cath, that is sweet about your late MIL. I just know someone who would do that, HAD to be a special woman. The fact that your FIL was willing to stop for her to do so, tells me he's probably a sweetheart, too. He must have loved her very much. This rose in one of the arrangements reminds me of a cross between Abraham Darby and a large size Earth Angel bloom. Yes, Kristine. I got a couple of Annie Laurie McDowell's from her last year and am very pleased. And she was very nice to deal with, as well.

I've never dealt with her professionally but I met her once on a trip to Sequoia a few years ago. She gave rooted cuttings of a daphne to me, Luanne and Carol, just because. She was quite friendly to us.

Ralph Moore told us that she was so good she could graft roses onto a bowling ball. I've never forgotten that.

Burling is a nice person and a good nurserywoman. She had some great plants for sale at the ARS convention in Palm Springs last year. She deserves our bussiness.

I bought 2 bands from her last year, fairly late in the season. Sadly, one did not make it (not her fault in the least, just late season purchase and did not have time to put on enough growth for the garage season). It was Silk Hat which I highly recommend.

The other one is a rose I ADORE, Lauren. For anyone who loves purple, it is a must.
