Climbing Souvenir de la Malmaison is considerably less hardy than New Dawn here. It might never cover your arch like in the pictures. It depends upon how it tolerates your winters. Your arch was really good, I like the ever so slightly over-grown lush look. In my climate Climbing Mme Caroline Testout and Climbing Ophelia do better for some reason. They don't get as damaged by the swinging temperatures of rain and bare-frost we have here; and they repeat well. CSdM often just get a single flower now and then after first flush. With less vigor then New Dawn, but very fine climbers still I like to mention Swan Lake (Schwanensee, very dark shiny leafs), Ilse Krohn Superior, and Coral Dawn (dusky pink type). I would like to mention Penny Lane too, but in colder climates it might just turn out a medium bush. I would like to order Coral Dawn, Blossomtime and Harlow Carr for this year. Actually I love to order all of them or maybe just choose some? I felt Coral Dawn and Blossomtime are quite same and I donÂt see much picture or people talking about Harlow Carr. Are they do best in hot climate and good repeating or not? Please someone sharing your experience and picture about those roses. Thank you very much.

I live in Quebec, Canada, and I have Coral Dawn climber. I only planted it two years ago, and until then, was not familiar with it. It is a beautiful rose, and in one Summer will grow to approx 5-7 feet or more. However, the canes are flexible and move them sideways, or upwards, as required and tie them to my fence. Depending on what type and height your fence is, I would recommend this rose. The colour is beautiful, and is a soft coraly pink. It smells really nice, and I love. I am just becoming familar with how it grows, but found a website in which the lady said hers dies back each winter and faithfully back each Spring. I didn't know that and wondered why my long canes didn't appear to be waking this Spring. New canes are growing very healthily from the base now (mid to end May) and I know it will be even prettier this year than last. I know now that I can cut the wintered canes back in the Spring, thanks to the web information. I have 2 John Cabot roses, and they are very robust and hardy, however........they are deadly thorny. Unless your space is an area that has little need to go near it, I wouldn't recommend John Cabot. I've had William Baffin in the past but it wasn't one of my favourite. I'd recommend either John Davis Explorer which can be trained as a climber, is extremely Winter hardy and disease resistant, and is GORGEOUS soft pink in colour with beautiful dark green leaves. It is not very thorny and easy to manipulate. Also, I love Iceberg Cl, (white) and have combined John Davis and Iceberg with clematis to climb together. Really nice! These roses need no special Winter protection, and neither does the Coral Dawn. I don't know where you live, but if you don't get a good blanket of snow in Winter, you might want to mulch around their bases for the Winter.

I am happy to say she is now a permanent keeper here. And she has buds on her too!!! Two or three of them I might add. May not get the required amount of sun but once it gets to about 2:30 or so in the afternoon she gets lots and lots of sun until it sets. So I am curious to see how she reacts to it.
