For me it's Roseraie de l'hay: very fragrant, no disease ever. I've three of them, and soon they will become five :-)

I don't have blackspot so I should probably not even comment, but for fragrance and heat tolerance I can recommend Therese Bugnet. Plus, she keeps on blooming, in spite of comments from other areas where apparently she doesn't or only a little.

My favorite fragrance is from Cramoisi. It's very healthy here and is anything twiggier? You prob have that one already though, Carrie.

well i will second ingrid's remarks about therese bugnet, it doesn't get bs here and always seems to have a bloom and is fragrant. sidonie is a good one also, for the same reasons. I have a band radiance, i think the pink or regular one that i got from vintage this spring, it is still rather small, so for the few leaves it does have has some bs, it wouldn't be my choice for bs free.

Carrie, I find that the radiance clan is more disease resistant than a lot of HT's here but they still get blackspot. The blooms are so beautiful and fragrant. I know that some area's of Texas have less blackspot pressure than we have so the amount of blackspot may be less in your area. For some reason I don't have the disease problems that a lot of people report with my Rose de Rescht. It's very fragrant and stays small. Rose du Roi has done well here too. Clean all year until fall but then has that brown crud on some of the leaves. I can't detect the fragrance of most Tea's but Devoniensis, and Clementina are very fragrant to my nose. I think you may already have those, though. Arethusa is also very fragrant to me and is very healthy. Mary Washington is also very healthy and fragrant to my nose but I think you may have her too?

Majority of fragrant and healthy roses are oncebloomers for me. All repeaters (except some rugosas, Darlow's Enigma and Knock out and its like) get BS badly here.

I like Lyda a lot, but it defoliates significantly, if grown no spray (at least in my garden). My sister has it too and she grows it completely no spray. More then 50% leaf loss(~70%), but still blooms well. I prefer it when my roses have leaves, so currently I spray my Lyda and plan to give it away some time soon, as part of my movement to no spray garden.

I'm ok with leaf loss (at least there) because it might be nice to see what is (then) to be behind Lyda (Alba Semi-Plena & a Chickasaw Plum).

My one y/o Safrano is the picture of health. Abundant green foliage and the most perfect buds I know. I am already planning a larger place for her.

Mystic Beauty, Souvenir de St. Ann's and Prairie Harvest-- ravishingly fragrant, and little or no BS here. Belinda's Dream and Quietness also stay very clean, but have just a light sweet fragrance not as intense. Of my rugosas, Wild Spice is the winner-- fragrant, healthy, and almost ever-blooming. I'd sure like to have Therese Bugnet!

Fair Bianca - a most perfect rose. You will get addicted to the fragrance, the blooms are most beautiful, she is very productive, reliable, extremely healthy, grows fantastically well on her own roots, and BONUS!!! will reliably send up a pink sport every few years, just wait it out, get her to spread, and it will happen. The canes that are sent out from the root are a wonder to behold. I planted 2 forty foot hedges of her - magnificent.

Gertrude Jekyll has my favorite fragrance so far and, in a summer positively ridden with blackspot on most of my other varieties, was clean and disease-free. I'm almost tempted to pull all those poor shrubs out and replace them all with Gertrude. Love the variety, though. Apothocary Rose did fine as well, also Reine des Violettes. Sharifa Asma, another with beguiling scent, was blackspot resistent in one part of the garden and riddled in the other--still puzzling about it.

In my garden, Reine des Violettes is super-fragrant and relatively healthy compared to most other roses. Add to that ... thornlessness. She's a big girl, when left unpruned, but those long, arching arms won't stab you.

Duchesse du Brabant and Clementina are fragrant and healthy for me. I'll be watching your thread here cuz I'm always looking for blackspot free fragrant roses. :-)

Carrie et al, must comment that Lyda Rose has negligible fragrance. Am growing her in part shade and so far, reasonably healthy and virtually ever-blooming. Lyda has a lot going for her but I wouldn't consider her fragrant, nope. She also is showing "monster" potential-- quite a big girl at age 2 (4X6 from a 1gal own-root), have no idea how big she'll ultimately get.

Barbara, this is interesting. My Lyda is VERY fragrant. In fact it is wafting fragance that feels the garden. It is not classical damask fragrance, but musk fragrance, but really strong. Some people don't smell musk scents. Could it be your case?

Perhaps as it grows it will gain in fragrance? At least. that would be my hope, with some I have (e.g.-Earth Song, McCartney Rose, Conrad Ferdinand Meyer, Darlow's Enigma).

Without spraying, the cleanest rose in our garden is "A Shropshire Lad", but it is no stinker. The best in our garden for good disease resistance AND fragrance are Heritage, Frederic Mistral and Mdm Isaac Periere.

In comparison (judging from the 2 out of 3 I have, and that it is still early-having planted these just in the Spring):

1. MIP & Heritage both appear to be doing well (no flowers
yet on MIP) as far as foliage, though Souvenir de Dr.
Reynaud seems a tad better than MIP on both counts.

2. Thought about Frederic Mistral, but went with the
McCartney Rose instead (which seems to be doing well,
though growing slowly, so far). May need to reconsider
FM (but for 2010, so far for fragrance, leaning to-
Desiree Parmentier, Climbing Clothilde Soupert & Marie
Pavie). 4, or multiples thereof, seems to be optimal
for shipping, though.

Walked out this very breezy morning and was greeted by wafting fragrance from Marie Pavie, Secret Garden Musk Climber and Blush Noisette. Both are in part shade and do suffer some foliage loss but less than 10%. Darlow's Enigma is busy setting pretty little hips, it's another healthy fragrant one. As far as healthy, Spice certainly deserves a mention here but the fragrance to me is straight pepper without any floral or sweet-- not a nice smell to my nose but YMMV.

Barbara, I hope your Spice fragrance changes to grapefruit soon; it took awhile for mine to do so. Sometimes now it's that pepper smell, sometimes grapefruit, but (I think) more often grapefruit. Mine's two years now. Yours is a baby from what I remember? Gean

Fragrant and bs free. I know you all think we don't have bs in CA but we do and yes the Radiance clan is a good clan. I would add the polyanthas, Marie Pavie and Cecile Brunner Spray as healthy and fragrant as well as Lyda. Mrs. Wood's lavendar pink Noisette, Nastarana, R've d'Or, Mme Jules Bouche, Distant Drums,Lemon Spice, Tiffany,Margaret Merrill and Redoute are healthy and scented in my no spray garden but I don't live where you live. Spice is also good here.
